“Trick or treat!” I said brightly, when my partner answered his front door.
Howell scowled at me. “It’s our night off, rookie.”
“It’s Halloween, sir,” I countered. “Where’s your costume?”
“I’m going as a werewolf in human form,” he said, dryly. “And what are you supposed to be?”
I raised my arms, letting the fabric of my costume straighten out, and twirled. “I’m an owl!”
“Then you can fly right back home.”
“You’re no fun, sir,” I said. “Your porch light is on - I’m here to help you hand out candy.”
“You can’t do that at your own place?”
“All the kids have come and gone already,” I explained. “And I’m on the top floor.”
My partner paused, looking at me, then said, “Counter offer. You answer the door and hand out the candy, and I’ll make us a batch of spiced cider.”
“Deal!” I agreed.
Howell’s street was much busier than my apartment building, but I always loved seeing the kids in their costumes, so I didn’t mind getting up every few minutes to answer the door. About an hour later, the crowd began to thin and my partner brought me a steaming mug of cider.
“There’s a classic monster movie marathon on,” I offered, and his scowl looked almost like a smile.
“All right.”
