“Officer Jones?”
I looked up from the reception desk of the courthouse to smile at the young man in the slightly-rumpled suit that rounded the corner. “Yes, sir,” I said.
He smiled back. “Assistant DA Wallace Deluth,” he said, holding out his hand, which I shook. “Thanks for making time to meet with me during your off hours.”
Deluth gestured down a hallway, away from the bright afternoon sunlight streaming through the front windows, and into his tiny office. He winced and moved a pile of folders from the only other chair in the room.
“Sorry about the mess,” he mumbled.
“My place is worse,” I assured him, and he smiled.
“Okay. Now, we’re here to discuss the Capston case. There’s enough evidence for a conviction- CCTV footage caught him red-handed- but his parents have enough money to tie this up in red tape, possibly get him a lesser sentence than he deserves, if we don’t make sure our case is airtight.”
“You can count on my cooperation,” I said. “Where should we start?”
Deluth smiled. “At the beginning, of course. In your own words- I want to hear everything, and we can clean it up for your testimony, Officer Jones.”
“Call me Zeke,” I said. “Okay. From the beginning…”
