“Hey, can I ask you a question?” asked our waitress.
I had gone up to the front of the diner for a better look at the dessert selection- it’s a known fact that diners always have fantastic desserts, and Philadelphia has some of the best diners anywhere. Howell and I made the rounds of the ones on our patrol route, and I made it a point to get a different dessert every time. Howell always got apple pie.
“Sure,” I said, looking up at her.
It was late and we were the only customers, aside from a couple of guys at the counter, and she was clearly a talkative soul.
“It must be nice to work with your dad, but isn’t it kind of hard with both of you being cops?”
I worked hard not to laugh. “He’s not my dad,” I told her. “Just my partner.”
“Really?” The young woman frowned over to where Howell was still sitting at our booth. “You’re not related at all?”
“Not that I know of,” I said. “I’ll have the chocolate mousse, and my partner would like a piece of apple pie.”
“Sure thing,” she said, and I went back to my seat.
“And how many types of chocolate are in whatever you ordered?” Howell asked.
“Two, I think,” I said. “The waitress thought you were my father.”
Howell snorted. “I’m old enough to be your great-grandfather,” he said.
I grinned. “And I hardly look old enough to drink. But how do we really know that we’re not distantly related?”
Howell paused as the waitress returned with our desserts- moist dark chocolate cake and golden flaky apple pie- then shrugged. “Maybe we are.”
