Nearly every cop in our precinct, and quite a few of the ones from other precincts that we’d worked with more than once, have asked me why I chose a career in law enforcement.
It was pretty common knowledge that I hadn’t started out wanting to be a cop, and that I’d gotten my degree before I’d signed up for the Police Academy. In fact, several of the more open-minded detectives had been known to use my library-based skills for help looking at their cases in a different way.
The people who asked always meant well- they were generally surprised that I had an English Lit degree, and I spun them a plausible and mostly-true story about the common good and wanting to do something fulfilling with my life.
Only Howell really understood the whole story.
Because, yeah, I did want to do something with my life, but when that life is suddenly looking to be several hundred years longer than you’d anticipated… well, it kind of forces a girl to get her priorities in order.
Meeting the other vampires was just the final push I needed to choose ‘cop’ as my career- they were all just so selfish. Sure, they give to charities, but only at galas and other ridiculous high-visibility events. They chose new members from the wealthy and beautiful, and I had been neither when I was Bitten.
The truth was, I became a cop just as much to annoy the Vampire Council as for my own conscience. But, I figured, there were probably worse reasons to serve and protect.
