“I don’t like leaving a case unsolved,” I said, as we left our squad car in the parking garage and headed into the precinct.
“Not every case can be solved, Jones,” said Howell. “And this isn’t the first one we haven’t closed.”
It wasn’t, not by a long shot. In a city as big as Philadelphia, there were dozens of crimes every day that would probably go unsolved, probably forever. Most cops thought that murders were the worst to never find closure for, but I thought that it was missing persons. Murders were horrible, of course, but at least the families knew for a fact that their loved ones weren’t coming home. We’d been out our whole shift canvasing neighborhoods, knocking on door after door with a picture of the young woman- girl, really, she was only a few years younger than me- asking if anyone had seen her. Nobody had.
“I know, sir. But I still don’t like it.”
“Good. That’s what makes good cops, not liking the idea of letting anyone stay missing.”
“Are you saying that I’m a good cop, sir?” I asked, starting to feel better enough to tease Howell.
“I said nothing of the kind,” my partner replied, then softened. “But, you might get there.”
“Why, sir, you do like me,” I said, smiling, because I knew that Howell would put a copy of this missing person flyer into the folder at the back of his desk drawer, and that some uneventful patrol, we’d start asking questions again.
