Snow and the Library

Feb 12, 2010 23:51

Today was the first day our library was open after being closed two days because of the snow, and even though I wasn't scheduled any hours, I went in this morning. Most of our pages, who check-in and reshelve books are high school kids, and they were back in school today, and I knew that we'd need to get started on the returned books this morning. And, let me tell you, there were LOTS of returned books!

I got to work at 9am, and did check-in pretty much straight through until 3pm (with half an hour for lunch) and there was still an entire bin full left to do!

The highlight, though, was when I was emptying the smaller inside return bin (as opposed to the industrial-strength bin for books returned from outside). A little picture book slipped between the sides of the bin and the spring-loaded bottom. The bin has a little slot in the bottom, 3" high-by-12" wide, so you can 'reach' under it. Luckily, I have long arms, because the book fell on the far side, between the metal scissor-things that hold up the bin's bottom and the wooden side, and I had to lay on the floor and stick my arm under the bin past my elbow. And luckily, my mom (who works in the office) had come by to deliver paperwork, and could make sure nobody dropped any large books into the bin while I had my fingers in the moving metal pieces. *g*

So, after checking in books all day, and my hour of shoveling snow yesterday, my left arm hurts at every joint- and only my left! Wrist, elbow, shoulder... but my right side doesn't hurt at all. Go figure.
