Setting: not necessarily pre-series, but pre-Vance-appearing-in-the-series
Summary: Vance contemplates his new office.
Office Space
Vance let his office door close behind him, then leaned against it, letting out a long breath.
His office.
The office of the Assistant Director of NCIS, in charge of west-coast operations.
Of course, the room was tiny, piled with boxes, file folders and stray bits of packing material.
But it was a real office, with a door that separated him from the noisy chaos of the bullpen, and cream-colored walls where he could hang his diploma and his prized boxing poster.
This was what he had worked so hard to achieve. This was why he had risked his life as a field agent for those long years, why he had put up with a succession of partners who put their personal feelings above protocol and had nearly gotten him killed more times than he really wanted to contemplate.
It was a new age of investigations, Vance knew, when they should be focusing on implementing new technologies rather than relying on outdated police methods. They were a federal agency, with jurisdiction over the entire United States Navy and Marine Corps, anywhere on the globe. They had resources that any police department would envy, and he saw no reason not to use every one of them.
They would still need field agents, of course, to actually make arrests. But running the agency was best left to people who could see the bigger picture.
Vance let out another sigh, then pushed himself away from the door.
Yes, the office was his. He had the title and the authority to start making the changes he knew NCIS needed.
He crossed to the desk and started to unpack, carefully choosing a place for everything to go.
But he wasn't planning to get too comfortable here.
He had his sights set on the Director's office.
