Pretty much immediately after being assigned as Howell’s new partner, I realized that there were distinct advantages to being a cop who used to work in a library. Howell, who looked like he could be on a police recruiting poster (they had asked, but he’d always refused) was either intimidating to those who had broken the law, or encouraging to those who’d had some laws broken on them.
At the moment, he was both, reading a would-be convenience store robber his Miranda rights, while interviewed the family who owned it. The mother, stroking her six-year-old’s hair, kept glancing sideways at Howell, always breathing a sigh of relief afterwards.
“We were just getting ready to open,” said the grandmother. Her accent was the heaviest of her family, but her English was very good. “We open at dawn, every day. I come downstairs early to start the coffee pots, when that man come in…”
I took down each of their statements, even six-year-old Pavan, who had felt comfortable enough to sit beside me, watching as I wrote to make sure I got everything right.
“Is there somewhere you can stay?” I asked, when I had finished my questions. The family lived above the store, but it was going to be a crime scene for at least another day.
“My sister,” said the father. “She lives in Fishtown.”
“We’ll give you a ride,” said Howell, appearing suddenly. “Jones, go with the ladies to help collect their overnight things.”
“Yes, sir.”
The mother caught my arm. “Thank you, officers.”
I nodded, and let her lead the way up the stairs, smiling and taking little Pavan’s hand. “You’re welcome, ma’am.”
