Unmarried

“That should do it,” said Nicolette, as the hatch slid closed behind her, wiping her hands on an oily rag. “Those converters should hold until we can scrounge up something better.”

There was no reply from inside the landship, and Nicolette frowned. She tossed the rag into her tool box and headed deeper into the ship, pausing in the hatchway to the cockpit.

“Hey,” she said, softly. “You’re awful quiet today.”

“Oh,” said Cosette, looking up from where she slouched in the pilot’s seat. “I just… today was supposed to be my wedding day.”

“Ah,” said Nicolette.

It had only been a few months since Cosette had left the palace where she had lived her entire life, the second princess of the Martian royal family. Nicolette had always done fairly petty jobs- minor heists, but mostly smuggling contraband- but when she had seen the young princes sneak out of the palace, badly disguised and all alone, she had taken the opportunity. She had thought the ransom of a royal would keep her financially solvent for a while, until the younger woman had collapsed into a tearful confession that she was running away from an arranged marriage to the much older man from one of the kingdom’s most ‘noble’ families.

And Nicolette had known that she could never send her back.

She slid a hand along Cosette’s shoulders, then up to her hair. It would be hard to recognize the Royal Princess in the woman beside her, the long golden hair now cut short, her pale skin now sun-kissed and streaked with dirt, her tailored dresses traded for more practical shipboard jumpsuits.

“You could go back, you know,” said Nicolette, softly, stroking her fingers behind Cosette’s ear. “I wouldn’t stop you.”

Cosette reached up to catch her hand. “No, you wouldn’t,” she said, smiling. “And that’s exactly why I’ll never leave.”

Nicolette smiled back and kissed her.
