What medicine can cure a broken heart?
What doctor has the strongest remedy?
What cruel fate keeps lovers long apart?
How soon until it brings you home to me?
I watched the ocean take you off to war
How proud I was that you were called to serve
I should have let you know there’d be one more
I should have said before I lost my nerve
I vainly try to patch my broken heart
With bloody stitches by a clumsy hand
And hope that I can someday play the part
Of mother when beside a crib I stand
And yet I feel my heart heal instantly
The instant that you turn your smile to me
