The Wizard and the Baker

Sara and Romaine had only traveled a short way out of the village when they came across a young boy sitting on the side of the road, crying. They stopped their horses, and both girls dismounted.

“Hey, there,” said Sara. “What’s wrong?”

The boy looked up. “You can’t help me,” he said. “I need a knight, for a brave quest. But I can’t find one.”

“Well, you’re in luck,” said Romaine. “Sara is a knight, and a very brave one. She can help you.”

The boy shook his head. “She won’t. None of the other knights have.”

“Why not?” demanded Sara.

“Because it’s not a princess or a dragon. It’s just my papa, who got taken by a bad wizard. But Papa’s all I have and I can’t save him all on my own!”

“We’ll help,” said Romaine. “Won’t we, Sara?”

“Of course we will,” the other girl agreed. “What’s your name?”

“Peter,” said the boy. “And my papa is Owen, the baker.”

Sara took his hand and pulled him to his feet, then helped him onto the horse behind Romaine. As they rode, Peter explained that his father’s bakery was the best in this kingdom, and that people often came from far away. But a few days ago, a wizard had come into the shop to order a special cake. He gave Owen the recipe, but when he came back the next day for the cake, he had taken Peter’s papa, too. And Peter hadn’t seen him since.

“But I know where he went!” the boy said. “I heard him talk about it, and I can take you there.”

The wizard lived in a large stone manor, and the three travelers stopped outside.

“It looks too nice for an evil wizard,” said Romaine, as she helped Sara into her armor.

“They always like nice things,” Sara told her. “And challenging knights. And showing off. Romaine, are you thinking what I’m thinking.”

The blonde girl grinned. “You know, I think I am.”

Sara threw her a salute, and walked to the waist-high stone wall around the house. “Lord Wizard!” she cried. “I am Sir Sara of Shady Hills, knight of the realm. Stand and face me!”

There was a puff of smoke, and a man appeared. He wore long black robes that shone in the sunlight, like silk or satin, and a dark, neatly-trimmed beard. “You dare to challenge me?” he demanded. “Foolish child!”

“You hold a man, a baker named Owen,” said Sara. “Release him, and I’ll let you live.”

The wizard laughed. He raised his hands, and a shower of sparks flew from his fingers. Sara barely dodged them. She drew her sword, using it to deflect a second flash of sparks. The wizard continued to throw spells at her, but Sara avoided them all.

She couldn’t keep it up for long, though, not in her armor. After a while, she began to slow, the spells missing her by smaller and smaller margins. Then Sara tripped, collapsing on the ground with a clatter, and lay still.

The wizard pointed his staff at her. “Do you yield, sir knight?” he asked, mocking.

“Sorry, no,” said Sara.

She kicked out, knocking the staff out of line, and rolled to her feet. She stumbled and almost fell, but Romaine appeared at her side to steady her.

“Mission accomplished!” the blonde said, grinning.

At the edge of the woods, Peter and Owen both sat on Romaine’s horse- when the girls waved, they rode off.

“No!” cried the wizard. “How-?”

“My friend snuck in the back,” said Sara. “Maybe you ought to lock your doors next time?”

She whistled, and her own horse stopped beside them. Sara swung into the saddle, and pulled Romaine up behind her. “Peter and his papa will meet us at the bakery,” said Romaine.

Sara grinned.
