Down the Path

A little farther into the woods, beyond the sounds of the cars and people in the world outside, were the sunlight shines dappled on the ground below and everything is calm and cool and quiet… there is a path.

It starts out small, so that you can barely see it through the leafy underbrush. Further on, it begins to widen. Rocks line the edge with neat precision, marking the path. The flowers grow more abundantly, here, primrose and honeysuckle, daisy and daffodil, larkspur and snowdrop, and blooms that have no names in any human tongue.

This deep into the forest, the air is still. It is broken by the echo of a laugh and the flicker of tiny wings, but when you turn to look, there is nothing there. The path narrows again as it winds around a rocky hill, beneath a curtain of ivy, to wander beside the trickle of a stream.

It grows darker with each step, until there is almost not enough light to see by. But then, new lights appear, twinkling and dancing in the trees like stars. The path twists and turns, curling inward toward a sudden, brighter, point of light.

Slowly, the light resolves itself into a thousand crystal lanterns, floating around a gleaming marble palace. It has mother-of-pearl roof tiles and wrought-gold balcony railings, ivory garden trellises and sweeping marble steps.

This is the home of Titania, Queen of the Fairies, and she has asked you to tea.
