Sibling Science Club
“They’re still at it, huh?” said Kaleb, plopping down on the couch beside John.
“Yeah,” said John, and accepted the bottle of beer he offered.
Rodney and Jeannie were standing in front of a rolling white board, now covered in equations and formulae that John had no hope of understanding, both siblings gesturing wildly as they tried to prove how abysmally wrong the other was.
John absently took a swig of beer as Rodney scrawled something else in an open space, simply admiring the shift of Rodney’s shoulders as he wrote, the familiar slope of his handwriting.
“I’m glad they worked everything out between them,” said Kaleb, after a moment.
“Huh?” said John, as Jeannie grabbed the dry erase marker and started scribbling her own numbers.
“Jeannie and Mer. I’m glad they can get together like this. I know Jeannie loves being home with Maddie, but I don’t think she realized how much she missed all this science stuff.”
“Even the arguing?” John asked, smiling.
Kaleb laughed. “Especially the arguing. She’s tried to explain some of this, but I don’t know enough about anything to be much of a challenge.”
“Yeah, I know what you mean,” said John. “Although, sometimes I say stupid things on purpose, just to get Rodney going.”
“I’ve done the same thing to Jeannie,” admitted Kaleb. “I know I probably shouldn’t get her riled up like that, but when she starts talking that passionately about something, she just looks so beautiful.”
“Yeah,” John agreed. “Rodney-”
He broke off, abruptly, and took a long swallow of beer.
“Hey,” said Kaleb, softly. “I can’t imagine how hard it’s been for you, being military and all. But you know that we’re happy for you and Mer, right?”
“Yeah, I-” John began, but stopped as Madison climbed onto the couch between them.
“Is science always this loud, Uncle John?” she asked, sprawled more in his lap than in her father’s.
“It is when your Uncle Mer does it,” John told her. “Especially if he’s working with someone as smart as your mom.”
“Mom is very smart,” Madison agreed. “Someday, I’m gonna understand all this stuff like Mom and Uncle Mer do.”
“I’m sure you will, kiddo,” said John.
“In the meantime,” said Kaleb. “I think our scientists could probably use a snack break.”
“Ice cream?” suggested Rodney and Madison, in exactly the same tone.
John had a sudden and complete mental picture, of a little girl with his dark hair and Rodney’s blue eyes, with Rodney’s crooked smile and his pointed ears. She wasn’t possible, John knew that, but he was amazed at how much he wanted her to be.
“Sheppard?” asked Rodney, standing much closer than he had been a moment ago. “You okay?”
“Yeah,” said John, and pulled Rodney in for a brief kiss.
Rodney blinked at him, pleased but questioning, and John grinned.
The scientist snorted. “You are such a dork, Sheppard.”
“But I’m your dork.”
“Yes, you are,” Rodney agreed, and kissed him again.
