It took Ziva a week after they’d brought her back from Somalia to ask the question, sitting on the basement steps like she’d been for the past seven nights.
“I was dead,” she said, bluntly. “Why did you come after me?”
Gibbs paused in his work and closed his eyes. Even if words did come easily to him, he wasn’t sure he could explain the hole that losing her had left in their lives, the tattered ends where her threads had once been woven in.
No, they hadn’t known Ziva was still alive. But it hadn’t mattered.
“Because you’re ours.”
