Just After Christmas
When McGee walked into Abby’s lab, he found her packing garlands of tinsel into cardboard evidence boxes. He frowned- her music was off and the lights were dim, not a very good sign at all.
“Hey,” he said. “What’s wrong, Abs?”
She managed a weak smile. “It’s nothing, really. I’m fine.”
“Do you really expect me to believe that?”
“No,” Abby admitted. “It’s just…” she gestured vaguely around the lab. “I love Christmas! It’s just really sad to have to put everything away.”
“Yeah, I guess it is,” said McGee.
“Of course it is, Timmy! It seems like as soon as Christmas is over, everyone forgets all about it. Nobody bothers being nice anymore, stores stop selling egg nog and there’s absolutely no holiday music on the radio after midnight on the twenty-fifth. It’s not fair to ramp people up like that and not ease them back down!”
“Huh,” said McGee, because it was true. He glanced around the lab. Abby loved decorating and there were things everywhere, but not all of them were strictly Christmas decorations. Some were more winter-themed, actually. “Well, then, why don’t we?”
“Huh?” she repeated, a question this time.
“Ease ourselves out of Christmas,” he said. “You’ve already taken down the tree, and we can finish putting away the tinsel today. Then we could do the paper chains tomorrow, and leave the lights for the beginning of next week. I’m sure you’ve got some Christmas music on your computer we can listen to, and when we get home, there’s a whole pile of Christmas movies we could watch.”
Abby nodded, beaming. “You are very brilliant sometimes, Timmy,” she said, leaning in to kiss him.
“Only sometimes?” he asked.
She grinned and kissed him again. “Most of the time.”
He kissed her back. “Merry Just-After-Christmas, Abs.”
