On the Case

When the bell rang to signal the end of the school day at the Alpha Centauri Station High School, Kieran Kelson grabbed her bag and headed for her locker. She had just grabbed her things and closed it again when she heard her name called from across the hall.

"Hey," she greeted.

Only standing beside each other would anyone have recognized seventeen-year-old Kieran and fifteen-year-old Krystopher, also called 'Kyt', as brother and sister. She was of average height for her age, with red hair she kept back in a long braid and pale skin scattered with freckles. Kyt was several inches taller, with short dark hair and a bit of his summer tan still in place. The only physical similarity was their sea-blue eyes, but the two siblings were as close as if they'd been born twins.

"Hey," Kyt replied, then he frowned. "What did you do?"

His sister offered him an innocent smile. "Now, why would you ask that?"

"Kieran..."

She grinned. "I talked to Mrs. Balinsky at lunch today."

He frowned. "Mrs. Balinksy, the lunch lady?"

"Yep."

Kyt sighed. "You found a mystery, didn't you?"

His sister's grin didn't falter in the slightest. "Yep."

He shook his head. "You and your mysteries, Key," he said, using his childhood nickname for her.

"What's life without a little mystery?" Kieran replied. "Are you going to help me solve it, or not?"

Kyt snorted. "As if I could trust you to do it by yourself," he said, but by then he was smiling, too. "All right, I'll bite. What's the mystery?"

"Well," his sister replied, as they left the school building for the sidewalk into the Station Center. "Did you know that Mrs. Balinsky is married to Sergeant Balinsky, from the hydroponics center? Apparently, one of the scientists, Dr. Eberhardt, has been doing experiments with different varieties of vegetables, testing out a new fertilizer he's developing. The day before yesterday, first thing in the morning when he went to check the seedlings, Dr. Eberhardt found that two of the containers of chemicals he used to make his fertilizer were mislabeled. Today, he discovered that someone had tampered with his computer records. Several people have access to his lab- nothing he has is classified or dangerous- but as far as he knows, he's the only one who's been in there."

Kyt frowned, thoughtfully. "Sergeant Balinsky is in charge of security for that section, right?"

Kieran nodded. "Right."

"And he or Dr. Eberhardt checked the security camera records?"

"Nobody but the doctor was in the lab either night," said Kieran.

"And nothing was actually stolen?" Kyt continued, and she nodded again. "Sounds like a mystery all right. Can we get access?"

"We're supposed to meet Sergeant Balinsky in the lobby of the Science Building in... half an hour. He can get us the security feeds and if we're lucky, we can convince Dr. Eberhardt to let us have a look at the lab."

Kyt smiled. "Well, I wanted a chance to check out my new computer authentication program."

"Then we're definitely taking the case?" Kieran asked.

"We're definitely taking the case," he replied. "But I'm not sure how you're going to solve this one."

She grinned. "Watch and learn, little brother."
