Magnetic Lessons
Jake started rearranging the magnetic letters as soon as he could toddle over to the fridge.
Of course, it was a while before he did more then just move them around randomly, but much sooner than most other kids his age. Jacob Daniel might have been the spitting image of Jack as a baby, but that brain was all Carter.
Once Jake got hold of an idea, he mastered it- talking, walking, figuring out how to get around the baby gates.
And now, apparently, spelling.
"Daddy, look!" cried three-year-old Jake, pointing at the fridge where he'd arranged the uneven, colorful letters J-A-K-E.
"Good job, buddy," Jack told him, looking up from the peanut butter and jelly sandwiches he was making. "What else can you spell?"
Jake frowned thoughtfully, then reached for more letters. A few minutes later, the fridge also said S-U-N, S-T-A-R, and M-O-O-N.
Jack grinned. "You've been hanging out with Mommy, haven't you?"
"Yeahsureyoubetcha," his son agreed.
"And Daddy, I see," said Sam, coming into the kitchen with baby A.J. on her hip. "Don't pretend that telescope on the roof isn't yours."
"Never said it wasn't," Jack replied, leaning over their daughter to kiss her briefly. "Lunch is nearly ready."
"Good," said Sam, then leaned closer to ask, "Is it too early for him to be writing, Jack? The baby book..."
He shrugged. "Every kid is different. Charlie didn't start until he was about to start Kindergarten, but Jake is a fast learner."
Jack had been worried when their son was born, but Jake was so different from Charlie that when he started seeing the similarities in little Amanda Janet, it didn't hurt to talk about him.
"Good," said Sam. "I just want him to be normal."
He kissed her again. "With us as parents? Not a chance."
