1. Favorite childhood book?
There are quite a few books I liked as a child, but my favorite is my mom's old copy of The One Hundred and One Dalmatians by Dodie Smith. She had it in high school, then gave it to me and I've read it at least twenty times. Maybe more.
2. What are you reading right now?
A Book of Love Poetry (that's the title, and what it is). I just finished Kris Longknife: Muntineer (a sci-fi novel) and before that the graphic novel version of Sherlock Holmes, The Hound of the Baskervilles.
3. What books do you have on request at the library?
None, at the moment.
4. Bad book habit?
Is obsessively collecting books a bad habit? Because I don't think it is.
5. What do you currently have checked out at the library?
I've been feeling sort of down lately, so I have a whole pile of poetry books out, along with another pile of kids' mythology books (also, the second and third seasons of "Sanctuary").
6. Do you have an e-reader?
No, I'm too poor *g*
7. Do you prefer to read one book at a time, or several at once?
One at a time.
8. Have your reading habits changed since starting a blog?
Not really. I find a few more books I'd like to read, but that's it.
9. Least favorite book you read this year (so far?)
Book Girl and the Suicidal Mime. It wasn't bad, necessarily, just really weird and kind of hard to follow.
10. Favorite book you've read this year?
I'm going to cheat a bit and say a series- I've read the first five Horatio Hornblower novels, and I love them. Even when I don't understand half the 18th century sailing terms, I just get sucked into the story.
11. How often do you read out of your comfort zone?
I don't really have one. I have genres and authors I like, but I'll read pretty much anything.
12. What is your reading comfort zone?
Science-Fiction, specifically "Star Trek" and "Star Wars" series. I've also got a pretty good collection of "Hardy Boys" and "Nancy Drew" books.
13. Can you read on the bus?
Yes, and on the plane. But not in the car, or I get motion sick.
14. Favorite place to read?
I can read anywhere (and I always have a book with me) but I usually end up reading in bed.
15. What is your policy on book lending?
Nobody I know ever seems to read the same things as me. I do share books with my mom and my brother, but we all live in the same house, so it doesn't feel like lending.
16. Do you ever dog-ear books?
No, never.
17. Do you ever write in the margins of your books?
No, if I want to remember something, I use sticky notes.
18. Not even with text books?
I hardly ever read those (hey, I passed!).
19. What is your favorite language to read in?
I can only read English, and a tiny bit in Latin.
20. What makes you love a book?
When an author can make me invested in the story- make me care what happens to the characters and how the book will end.
21. What will inspire you to recommend a book?
I don't, generally. If someone asks, I'll say if I liked a book or not. And if I read one I think my mom would like (I read much faster), I'll pass it along.
22. Favorite genre?
Science-Fiction, definitely.
23. Genre you rarely read (but wish you did?)
Non-fiction in general, and biographies. I haven't read one of those in ages.
24. Favorite biography?
Yeah, see, I have no idea.
25. Have you ever read a self-help book?
I'm sure I have, but I don't make a habit of it.
26. Favorite cookbook?
I can't cook, and all the cookbooks around here are Mom's.
27. Most inspirational book you've read this year (fiction or non-fiction)?
Um... no clue.
28. Favorite reading snack?
I tend to read right before going to sleep, so no snacks.
29. Name a case in which hype ruined your reading experience.
I don't usually buy into the hype, but the last "Harry Potter" book was kind of a let-down for me.
30. How often do you agree with critics about a book?
I don't read them. I either like or don't like a book on my own.
31. How do you feel about giving bad/negative reviews?
I don't write reviews, either.
32. If you could read in a foreign language, which language would you chose?
I think learning to read in Japanese would be interesting.
33. Most intimidating book you've ever read?
I don't think I've ever been intimidated by a book.
34. Most intimidating book you're too nervous to begin?
Still nope. There's a lot I haven't gotten to, yet, but none I'm avoiding.
35. Favorite Poet?
Alfred, Lord Tennyson. I even named one of the characters in my novel after him. (Chief Nurse Henry Tennyson)
36. How many books do you usually have checked out of the library at any given time?
Between none and twenty/twenty-five (if I have a pile of picture books)
37. How often have you returned books to the library unread?
Never. But then, I work at the library, so I don't have overdue fines *g*
38. Favorite fictional character?
Keladry of Mindelan, from Tamora Pierces's "Protector of the Small" quartet.
39. Favourite fictional villain?
Grand Admiral Thrawn, from the "Star Wars" books (mostly by Timothy Zahn).
40. Books I'm most likely to bring on vacation?
I have a specific list of 'travel books', which I can read over and over, and I bring one or two with me (last time, I took Protector of the Small #3: Squire and Star Wars: X-Wing #9: Starfighters of Adumar and read each of them twice).
41. The longest I've gone without reading.
What's the longest I've slept? That's probably it.
42. Name a book that you could/would not finish.
The Mask of Thespis, and I don't remember the author. It was a murder mystery set during rehearsals for a play and so badly written that I would not read more than two chapters.
43. What distracts you easily when you're reading?
Nothing distracts me easily, but most often is my cat wanting to be petted instead of letting me turn the pages.
44. Favorite film adaptation of a novel?
One time I actually liked the movie better than the book- "Stepsister from Planet Weird". Not-that-great book but cool Disney movie.
45. Most disappointing film adaptation?
Almost all books are better than the movies, but the worst was "Ella Enchanted". It's like the movie-makers didn't even read the book first.
46. The most money I've ever spent in the bookstore at one time?
Back when I had an actual job, I spent a little over $300 (US) once. I was with my mom and my brother, and getting a couple of gifts... but most of that was mine *g*
47. How often do you skim a book before reading it?
None, I just read 'em.
48. What would cause you to stop reading a book half-way through?
It would have to be really, really badly written or with horribly annoying characters.
49. Do you like to keep your books organized?
When I get my library up and running, they'll be alphabetical by title or by series title, then chronological.
50. Do you prefer to keep books or give them away once you've read them?
Keep them!
51. Are there any books you've been avoiding?
Maybe not avoiding, but I still haven't gotten around to reading White Teeth.
52. Name a book that made you angry.
Um... can't think of one.
53. A book you didn't expect to like but did?
The "Artemis Fowl" series. I thought they'd be another of those kids' fads- series of terrible books that are suddenly 'all the rage'- but I loved them. I read the last four all in a row, in about a week or so.
54. A book that you expected to like but didn't?
Cinderella Ate My Daughter. It was supposed to be about how the Disney Princess thing is corrupting today's youth, but it was basically this rant about a mother who didn't want to read her kid fairy tales (I understand keeping kids away from commercialism, but willfully making her ignorant of cultural facts is just mean)
55. Favourite guilt-free, pleasure reading?
That would be the already-mentioned piles of children's picture books. Sometimes, small words and pretty illustrations to familiar stories (I usually pick fairy tales or mythology) are just what the soul needs.
