Summary: "Mum? What are you doing?"
Previous Vala folded another shirt, smoothed out the creases, and set it into the box beside the others. She reached for another, folded it, and added it on top of the first.
"Mum? What are you doing?"
She looked up to see Benedict, her second-oldest, standing in his bedroom doorway- the older he got, the more he looked like his father, but he was the only one of their children who'd picked up her accent.
Vala closed the box quickly. "Nothing, darling."
Ben rolled his eyes. "Seriously, Mum? I don't leave for another two weeks!"
"I know that," his mother replied. "You're so much like me, Benedict, but you pack the same way as your father- at the last minute, and mostly books."
Ben smiled. "Yeah, okay, you've got me on that one. But I was betting on another week before your 'my baby is going off to college' freak-out. I owe Dave twenty bucks."
"You were betting on me?" Vala demanded, with mock indignity. "Serves you right, then."
Her son rolled his eyes and crossed to his bed, pulling the box shut and sliding it onto the floor beside the pile of still-flat ones. "I am coming back, you know."
Vala sighed. "I know, Benny. But it's a mother's right to worry. Why did you have to choose a college so far away?"
"Mum, the University of Cairo is only a few thousand miles from here. You didn't freak out this much when Zoë started school."
"Zoë is at Colorado State. She comes home every weekend so we can do her laundry and she goes on off-world digs whenever she can talk Dad into it. But you're not going to be home until Christmas, at the very least. I'd ask you to call me every day, of course, but who wants to talk to their mother when there's all that fun to be had with people your own age? But once a week, maybe? Although, talking on the phone just isn't the same as having you here."
Ben hugged her tightly, resting his head on her shoulder- he'd been taller than his mother for a few years, but it still surprised her somehow.
"I won't forget about you in Cairo," he assured her. "I can't promise to call every day, but it'll definitely be more than once a week. And I've already talked Aunt Sam into getting me a video link with the SGC, so you'll even be able to see me."
Vala hugged him back, remembering long ago days when she had been able to hold him in her arms and protect him from all the dangers of the universe.
"Just be careful, all right?" she asked, and released him.
Ben nodded. "I'm always careful, Mum. What are the chances of me getting into serious trouble in the middle of Egypt?"
"In this family, disturbingly high," Vala said. "And there's no getting out of Dad and I coming to see your dorm room, either."
"Hadn't even thought it, Mum."
