Vala couldn't sleep.
In all honesty, she hadn't tried yet. Her memories had all returned, but she still didn't feel entirely comfortable in her own room. It was hers, though, she knew that much. She recognized the base, the room, the things in the room. She remembered when she had gotten them, why she'd arranged them the way she had.
And, somehow, she still felt uncomfortable.
It was a nice room, as far as government-issue rooms went. She'd made efforts to make it more comfortable, of course, adding pillows in vibrant colors and covering the bland furniture in soft fabrics. She'd found trinkets and nick knacks- bought, all of them, not stolen- which sat on the dresser and chosen prints of famous Earth art to hang on the walls.
But she hadn't missed this place.
Vala knew that, even now, she could leave this room, never to return, and she wouldn't miss it. There was nothing in this room she couldn't leave behind or replace when she moved on to somewhere new.
And for the first time in her life, that scared her.
Daniel had been right, she'd been running for a very, very long time. Trying to outrun her past, outrun Qetesh, maybe even trying to outrun herself. Running meant she didn't get attached and not getting attached meant she had nothing to leave behind when she left. She might have kept running forever, if it hadn't been for one thing.
Or rather, for one person.
In all the time she spent trying to remember her past, she'd gotten nothing more than disjointed images. She'd listened to Cameron for hours, telling her all about their work, the missions, the planets, the people, and she hadn't gotten so much as a glimmer of recognition.
She'd recognized Daniel the moment she'd heard his voice.
Of course, she hadn't known why she recognized him, or who he was, which just made her more confused and scared. She clutched her stolen gun with shaking hands, but she couldn't bring herself to shoot him.
"It's time to come home," he said.
And that was all it took for her to remember. Cheyenne Mountain and the SGC, Cameron, Samantha and Teal'c, General Landry and the other SG teams, coming to Earth, going through the 'gate- and Daniel, who was always on her side, even when he had no reason to be.
No one had ever trusted her like that before.
Vala didn't want to run anymore. She wanted, more than anything, a place to belong. But this room, nice as it was, just wasn't it. When Daniel had said 'home', her first memory hadn't been this room, or any other.
It had been him.
She was on her feet instantly and without even realizing where she was going, she found herself outside the door to Daniel's on-base quarters. She knocked quickly, before she could change her mind.
Daniel answered the door, still putting on his glasses, and frowned. "Vala?"
He clearly hadn't been expecting her- at least not in her current state, she realized, wearing the BDUs they'd given her in the infirmary. He was probably remembering the time she'd broken into his room in her underwear, but Vala was too distracted to worry about that now.
"Daniel?" she said, softly. "I..."
He took her hand and led her inside. "Vala, are you okay? You should be resting."
"I can't sleep," she admitted. "Could I... sleep here?"
"Vala-"
"Just sleep!" she added quickly. "Daniel, I know Dr. Lam said my memories had returned and they have, mostly. I recognize everything and everyone, but they just don't seem quite real yet, except... except for you."
For a long moment, Daniel just looked at her, then he released her hand and moved across the room. She thought he was about to tell her to leave, but he opened his dresser and pulled out a set of pajamas like the ones he already wore, striped green instead of blue.
"Just sleep," he told her firmly, and she nodded eagerly.
He looked away while she changed and let her crawl into the bed before he turned off the lights. When he got in beside her, Vala cautiously slid closer. She knew she shouldn't risk annoying him when he'd let her stay, but she badly needed human contact- her shoulder bumped his, and instead of pulling away, he simply lifted his arm and put it around her. Vala let out a sigh of relief and settled her head on his shoulder.
"Daniel?" she asked, after a long moment.
"What?" he replied, cautiously.
"Can I keep these pajamas? They're really comfy."
She could feel his laugh, and grinned in reply. "Sure. Good night, Vala."
"Good night, Daniel."
Vala closed her eyes and gave a tiny contented sigh. She was asleep within moments.
It was good to be home.
