Family Christmas
Years of being a trained federal agent meant that McGee was awake as soon as he heard the pounding of footsteps up the stairs, but he was still unprepared for the two small bodies threw themselves across the bed.
"Daddy! Daddy, it's Christmas!"
"Wake up, Daddy, Santa came!"
"And brought us presents!"
McGee kept his eyes shut. "Remind me why we decided to have kids again, Abs?"
"It seemed like a good idea at the time."
"Mommy!" The covers were pulled back, and five-year-old Katie frowned at her parents. "It's Christmas."
"It is," McGee agreed. "But it's really, really early. Can't we sleep just a little longer?"
"No," said two-year-old Peter flatly. "Christmas now."
"He is so your kid," McGee muttered, while Abby giggled. "All right, you hooligans, we're up."
"No, you're still lying down," protested Katie, tugging on her father's hand until he sat up.
"You know what?" said Abby, sitting up as well. "Since you're so good at waking people up, why don't you go tell Grandpa Gibbs it's Christmas?"
"Okay!" both children agreed, hopping off the bed and racing for the door.
McGee reached for his bathrobe. "Are you sure that was a good idea, Abs?"
She grinned. "Gibbs said he wanted a family Christmas."
At the top of the stairs, things finally resembled the kind of Christmas mornings McGee remembered from his childhood- noisy chaos. Katie held Ducky's hand on the steps and Gibbs scooped up Peter, who had somehow taken Palmer's glasses. The only ones missing were Tony and Ziva, in Israel with their kids for Chanukah.
"Having a good Christmas, boss?" McGee asked.
Even with a toddler over one shoulder, Gibbs managed to give his agent a headslap.
"Don't worry, Gibbs," said Abby. "Maybe next year, we'll get them to sleep past five AM."
