Four Days
It was two o'clock in the morning and Abby was in MTAC.
Officially, she had volunteered to receive the status update from an agent in the field abroad, although his mission was not time-sensitive, more about building international relations than catching bad guys. Officially, she was doing a favor for Gibbs, staying late so that the members of his team could go home after a long day.
Unofficially, she was using government satellite time to talk to her husband.
The techs had gone home, too, so Abby initiated the video feed herself, and couldn't help the broad grin when his face appeared on screen.
"Hi, Timmy," she said, grin still firmly in place.
McGee's answering smile was just as bright. "Hey, Abs. How are my favorite girls today?"
Abby ran a hand gently over her rounded middle. "We don't know if the baby's a girl, McGee," she reminded him. "But we're both fine."
"Good. I'm sorry I wasn't there to take you to the doctor."
"I am perfectly capable of taking myself to the doctor. Besides, I got Ducky to come with me, and that's always fun."
McGee laughed. "I'll bet it is. But you're sure everything's all right?"
"Yes, Timmy," she said patiently. "Mommy and baby are both doing just fine."
There was a moment of contented silence, then McGee said, "I think this is the first time I'd ever tried to get out of going to a technology conference."
"Probably," agreed Abby, grinning. "But if I can't go, I need somebody there who can tell me about all the awesome new equipment. I mean, imagine if we sent Tony."
He laughed again. "God forbid."
"Oh!" said Abby. "That reminds me. I have messages from everyone! Tony says, 'Don't have too much fun, McGeek', and Ziva says, 'Do not drop your guard, ' and Ducky says, 'Do come home safely, Timothy,' and Palmer just says, 'Hi,' and Gibbs... well, Gibbs didn't actually say anything, but he misses you, too."
"I'll be back in four days, Abs," McGee promised. Something beeped softly beside him, and he sighed. "Time's up."
"Four days, Timmy?"
"Four days," he replied. "Love you, Abs. Both of you."
"Love you back!" she said, and the screen went dark.
"Four days," she repeated to Baby McGee. "Just four days until your daddy comes back, and brings me all sorts of shiny equipment to ask the director for."
