All the Fuss
Ianto had no intention of celebrating his birthday.
It wasn't that he was embarrassed about his age, he just couldn't understand how turning sixty-eight warranted any more fuss than turning sixty-seven. Ianto was retired now, but he still consulted with Torchwood, so he expected nothing much more spectacular than a few well-wishes from Jack's current team when he stopped by for lunch that day.
Really, he should have realized Jack would have other plans.
"Happy birthday!" the new team cried, as the door closed, throwing streamers and confetti over Ianto's head.
"Jack put you lot up to this, didn't he?" Ianto asked.
"Yes, he did." The man in question appeared from his office, and the children- god, they were young weren't they?- scrambled back to their own work spaces. "I couldn't let you forget what today was, could I?'
Ianto rolled his eyes. As if he'd forget that he was steadily going gray, that his knees were starting to give out on him, that his memory wasn't quite what it had been, especially when Jack still looked twenty and beautiful.
"Jack..." he began, but the other man grabbed his hand.
"Look, Ianto," Jack said, glancing around briefly to make sure his team really wasn't eavesdropping. "I know you don't like making a fuss about your birthday. But there should be fuss. There should be lots of fuss. Because another birthday means one more year I got to spend with you."
"Jack Harkness, are you getting soft in my old age?" Ianto asked, smiling.
"Maybe. But if there's one thing I've learned in two-hundred-some odd years, it's that we should cherish the things- and especially the people- we love, because we never know what may come. "
Ianto smiled, and kissed him. "If it means that much, you can fuss, Jack."
