Not a Date
It was their twentieth not-date.
True, Abby and McGee were out to dinner, just the two of them, complete with wine, but what they were doing was not a date because they were not dating anymore. Again.
They just had lunch together every day, and dinner at least once a week, and frequent coffee/caf-pow! meetings. And there had been that thing, two weeks ago, when a case had really bothered her and she had shown up at McGee's door in the middle of the night without quite knowing how she'd gotten there.
Tonight, they were eating at one of D.C.'s better restaurants, celebrating the end of a case where their cyber-savvy had saved the day. They talked about anything and everything, smiling and laughing.
But it wasn't a date, Abby reminded herself. Her on again/off again relationship with McGee was finally off, for good. She was so often the indecisive one, wanting them to get back together only to break things off again, that she didn't think it was fair of her to keep asking anymore.
"Abby?" asked McGee, interrupting her thoughts. "This is nice, isn't it?"
"Yeah," she replied, a little more dreamily than she'd intended. "I mean, sure, McGee. This is nice."
"It'd be even nicer if we could do this more often," he continued. "Say, every night?"
"Timmy?"
McGee reached across the table to take her hand, threading their fingers together. "I think we should give us another try, Abby."
She bit her lip, unconsciously squeezing his hand. "I'll only break your heart, McGee."
He smiled. "Maybe. But that's no reason not to try."
"There are no guarantees for this, Timmy. And with our record..."
"Is that a 'yes' or a 'no'?" he demanded.
Abby returned his smile. "Yes. Does that make this a date, then?"
"Absolutely."
