It May Not Show at the Start"
“Lena? Have you got a minute? It… it’s important.”
Lena looked up to see Kara hesitating in her office doorway, looking nervous.
It was the first time she had seen her since Lex, since finding out the truth, since that game night when she had just barely managed to keep it together. Lena thought, after going through all of her brother’s data and really processing what a lie she had believed all this time, that she would want to confront Kara about it.
But now, she smiled and said, “Of course, Kara. Come in.”
Kara followed her over to the office couch and immediately began fidgeting with the hem of her skirt. “I…” she began. “I have something to tell you. It’s a big something. Maybe a bad something. But I really - I just need to get this all out before you say anything, okay?”
Lena nodded.
“Thank you,” said Kara. “It’s a secret. I hadn’t meant not to tell you, Lena, please understand that. Until a few years ago, I’d never actually told it to anyone. Alex knew from the beginning and there just wasn’t anyone else who needed to know. But then I came to National City and it just… happened. I didn’t know you then or I probably would have told you. Maybe. Everyone else just found out, and I didn’t want them to help at first, but honestly, I appreciated not having to do it alone, and I…”
She let out a huff of breath.
Anyway, I should have told you long before you, but I hadn’t and then it had been so long I figured it had been too long. I know how many people have betrayed your trust and I just… I couldn’t bring myself to admit that I was one of them. But I am, Lena and I am so, so sorry. So, when I tell you - if you want to yell or hit me or… or never speak to me again, I’ll understand.”
Kara took a deep breath, then reached up to take off her glasses. She pulled the clip from her hair, letting it fall around her shoulders. “I’m Supergirl.”
Lena felt her anger flare - then subside.
Because Supergirl was looking at her with Kara’s repentant frown, the same expression she used when she had to skip a lunch date or had forgotten the extra order of Lena’s favorite dessert.
She had been so angry that Kara had never told her, that someone who claimed to be one of her dearest friends had lied to her, over and over - but hadn’t Lena lied, too? She had kept her harunel experiments from everyone, and look at how that had turned out. And Kara thought she had been selfish, keeping the secret, but Lena was sure she had done it more to protect her, to keep Lena out of the danger of Supergirl’s world.
Kara had always been trying to protect her. Even when Lena was so hostile to Supergirl, Kara had continued to be her friend.
“Lena?” said Kara, hesitantly. “Please say something.”
Lena knew that if she said what she had thought she would want to say, Kara would leave. But she also knew that after Kara left, thinking that Lena hated her, Supergirl would still race to her rescue, even if she knew she wouldn’t be welcome.
Lena took a deep breath. “I know.”
Kara blinked. “You… you do?”
“I only found out recently,” Lena admitted, and she could tell from Kara’s wince that she knew it had been Lex. “But you’re still you, whether you call yourself Kara Danvers or Supergirl. You’ve always been a good friend. Even when I haven’t.”
“Lena…”
“It’s not as if all the secrets were one-sided. I kept my share of them, too, and much more selfish ones. But it’s something we can both work on.”
“Oh, absolutely,” Kara agreed eagerly. “No more secrets. Unless it’s about a surprise party.”
Lena managed a smile. “That sounds reasonable.”
“Great,” said Kara, then frowned again. “You’re sure you’re not mad?”
“I was,” said Lena. “But I understand. Now, I’m really more mad at myself.”
“What? Why?”
“Kara, glasses and an updo-” Lena twirled her hand to indicate the other woman’s previous hairstyle, “-are not that great a disguise. But it works! And I’m supposed to be a genius.”
“That’s why it works so well,” said Kara, with a small but genuine smile. “Because you think too hard.”
Lena smiled back for a moment, then said seriously, “I won’t just be able to forget about this, Kara. I understand and I forgive you and I hope you forgive me and I will not let this ruin our friendship, but…”
Kara nodded, sadly. “I understand. Honestly, I’m so thrilled you still want to be my friend that you can hold it over me for… forever, if you want.”
Lena smiled again. “Definitely not that long.”
“Oh, good.”
“And does that mean I get to join your superhero team?”
“It’s not my team,” Kara protested. “But… if you want to…”
“I think I’d like that,” Lena said, seriously.
Kara beamed.
