Captain Weir Day

“There you are, Sheppard,” said Rodney, indignantly. “What are you doing here?”

John arched an eyebrow, softening the Vulcan gesture with a very Human smirk. “Well, McKay, this is my office.”

“Yes, but you’re never here.”

“Exactly. And if you didn’t think to look for me here, Elizabeth won’t, either.”

Rodney narrowed his eyes. “What did you do now?”

In general, the crew of the Atlantis were a united front. But as Security Chief, John was more concerned with anything that could be a danger to his ship and crew, and while Elizabeth mostly agreed with that attitude, she and John unexpectedly disagreed on specific incidents, like when he’d written exemplary service on each of his security team performance reviews instead of writing actual details, or when he let Ronon ambush unsuspecting crewmen as part of ‘awareness training’.

“Nothing,” John said, defensively. “I just don’t want to ruin the surprise.”

“What surprise?”

“Captain Weir Day.”

Rodney frowned. “Captain Days are a holiday for children, Sheppard, and we don’t have any onboard.”

“No, it’s a holiday for showing your captain, whose ship is all alone in a distant quadrant of the galaxy with no ability to contact Command and no one she can talk to who isn’t a member of her crew, how much we appreciate her.”

“Well, when you put it that way,” Rodney grumbled.

“Although,” John admitted. “Without any kids, I’m not sure what we can do.”

“I’m not doing a skit. Or a song.”

John laughed. “I’m sure Elizabeth is grateful for that.”

“Hey,” Rodney protested, but mostly out of habit. “But if there’s no kids, I don’t see why this has to be a big deal. Elizabeth probably doesn’t want to sit through a long presentation any more than we do. Why not just schedule a nice dinner for the senior staff and ask Teyla to make a speech.”

“Teyla…” John repeated. “Rodney, you’re a genius.”

“Yes, yes, I knew that.”

“No, really. We could have everyone else write her a note, something she’s helped them with or something they admire about her.”

“But not the senior officers?” Rodney asked, hopefully.

“Nah, we can probably get away with a toast and agreeing with whatever Teyla says,” John replied, then added more softly, “I am grateful to Elizabeth. If she hadn’t requested both of us for her crew, we wouldn’t have met and I…”

Rodney smiled. He held up one hand, first two fingers extended together, and John pressed his own against them in a Vulcan kiss, his love and contentment washing into their bond like warm, gentle waves.

“Yeah,” Rodney agreed. “We probably owe her one for that.”

John leaned in to kiss him the Human way.
