“It’s just…” said Cam. “I feel like I’m not being fair to you. To us.”
Ellie frowned. “What do you mean?”
“We’ve only seen each other three times this year and it’s already May.”
“Seen each other in person,” she corrected. “We talk and text almost every day, if I’m not swamped with a case or you’re not on another planet.”
“Yeah, but…”
“But what? You think it’s not fair that you haven’t given up a job you love, given up your career, to move halfway across the country for me?”
“Well, maybe…”
“Because you’ll notice that I haven’t given up my job, either,” said Ellie. “I mean, of course I wish we could be together more often. I wish I could fall asleep with you every night and wake up with you every morning. I wish you were here when I’m having a tough case and I wish I could be there for you when you’re having a tough mission. But that’s not who we are.”
Cam reached out to take her hand. “I want all of that with you, too. But you’re right. Our jobs are too important for either of us to give up. But where does that leave us?”
“Right where we are,” Ellie told him. She shook their joined hands, smiling. “You are an awesome boyfriend, Cameron Mitchell. You’re thoughtful and supportive and that thing for my birthday last year… so much better than any guy I’ve dated. Including the one I married.”
“Yeah?” he asked.
“Yeah. So, you have fun out there, exploring new worlds and saving this one, but you remember that you’re mine, airman.”
Cam grinned, “Yes, ma’am,” and kissed her.
