Armistice
“We are glad of your visit,” said Kida. “But perhaps now you would like to talk about what has brought you here.”
Audrey sighed, hands wrapped around her mug of sweet Atlantian tea. “It was war,” she said, softly.
Kida nodded. “In the time of my father’s father, when Atlantis sat on the surface of the ocean, we traded with the people of many other cities. Often, they were at war with each other.”
“It wasn’t just cities, Kida, it was the whole world. Millions of people…”
“That sounds terrible,” the queen said. “And you fought in this war?”
Audrey snorted. “The army doesn’t take girls. But Sweet and Vinny were drafted. We’d all gone our own ways, after we left you, so I hadn’t known that, but I ran into Sweet in France. I was fixin’ up machines and he was fixin’ up people, but he was… There’s new machines, now, Kida. Worse than anything Roarke had. And the gas…”
Kida touched her shoulder. “You are welcome to stay with us as long as you like.”
Audrey smiled. “Not forever. But for a little while. We just need peace.”
They looked across the square at where Milo was helping a group of children teach an Atlantian game to Sweets, Vinny and Mole, while Mrs. Packard looked on. All of them looked less tense than when they had arrived.
“You shall have it.”
