Christmas Time in the City
There was a traffic jam, and they were stuck in the middle of it.
“I’m sorry, sir,” said the fresh-faced airman driving them. Jack wasn’t sure if it was just that he was getting older or if these kids were really getting younger - this one hardly seemed old enough to have a license.
“It’s not your fault,” Jack said.
“Thank you, sir. But there’s no way we’ll be able to get through this and still make your meeting on time.”
“Yes, what a shame,” drawled Jack.
Beside him, Sam frowned. “You said you had plenty of time to come pick me up from the Air Base,” she said, accusingly.
“I did,” said Jack. “I was there before your transport even set down.”
“Jack…”
“I don’t actually need to be at this meeting, Carter,” he said. “The Assistant Head of Homeworld Security knows what we’re doing well enough to represent us, in the unlikely even we’re even asked anything. I’ll read her report tomorrow - don’t give me that look, I’m The Man now, I have to read reports - and I’ll be all caught up.”
She continued to frown at him for a moment, then, “Okay.”
“Yeah?” Jack grinned. “Airman Stiver, forget about the meeting. We’re going straight to my apartment. You know where that is, right?”
“Yes, sir,” said the kid. “But, um, sir, we are still stuck in traffic.”
“Whenever you can get us there is fine,” said Sam. “We’ll have plenty of time to see all of the beautiful Christmas decorations.”
They were in the shopping district of the nice part of D.C. and all of the shops were decorated for the season.
“Yes, ma’am,” said the kid. “I think there’s some holiday music on the radio, if you like.”
“Perfect,” said Jack.
“…You can plan on me / Please have snow and mistletoe / And presents on the tree…”
Ahead, the traffic moved and they rolled forward - a whole ten feet.
“So, Carter,” said Jack. “When was the last time you were in the backseat of a car with a boy?”
Sam snorted a laugh. “I was a nerd with a military father - I skipped that part of adolescence.”
“Unacceptable,” he said, and leaned forward. “Airman?”
“Yes, sir?”
“Colonel Carter and I need to discuss some very classified information. You are to keep your hands on the wheel and your eyes on the road. Understood?”
“Yes, sir,” said Stiver, sounding a little confused.
Jack settled back in his seat and reached for Sam’s hand. “So, colonel, shall we?”
She unfastened her seatbelt and slid over to join him. “This isn’t quite enough space for… debriefing.”
“Best to just stick to the basics, then,” he murmured, and pulled her in for a long, deep kiss.
From the front seat, there was a whispered, “Oh, my,” and the volume of the music got suddenly louder.
Sam giggled into the kiss. “Merry Christmas, Jack.”
He grinned back. “Yes, it is.”
“…Silver bells, silver bells / It’s Christmas time in the city…”
