Branching Out

Nearly a decade of working together in the field, often in life-or-death situations, had made Sam acutely aware of Jack’s subtle emotional tells. She knew when he had sensed danger, when he was secretly amused or angry and trying not to show it. They could communicate entire sentences with just the quirk of an eyebrow or the inflection of a name.

Of course, Sam didn’t need to use any of those skills to know how Jack was feeling when he leaned sideways to rest his head on her shoulder and whined, “Carter, I’m bored.”

Any other time, she probably would have reminded him that three-star Air Force generals, even retired ones, shouldn’t whine like toddlers. But this was their tenth public appearance in the two weeks since the Stargate Program had been declassified, and Sam was getting pretty tired of all the pomp and circumstance, herself.

“Me, too,” she said. “Let’s get out of here.”

Jack grinned. “I love it when you stick it to authority.”

“I thought you liked it when I was the authority.”

“I like both,” he said, eyeing her four stars appreciatively. “So it’s a win-win for me. Where are we going?”

“Somewhere that’s not here,” said Sam, then paused. “I think I remember seeing a park up the street.”

“Sweet.”

Daniel broke between them, frowning. “You guys aren’t actually going to leave… are you?”

“Hold down the fort, Danny,” said Jack, then held out a hand. “Carter?”

She smiled. “Yes, sir.”

“Hey, you can’t-” Daniel began, but they ducked out the side door of the municipal building before he could finish.

Two young airmen insisted on coming with then, but their combined rank was enough to leave them stationed at the park entrance ‘standing guard’.

Jack headed straight for the swings, already building up a good rhythm by the time Sam joined him.

“This is much better,” he said, holding on with just one hand while he loosened his tie.

“Hmm…” said Sam.

“Something wrong, Carter?”

“No, no, I was just thinking…”

Jack grinned. “When are you not?”

She reached over to slap his shoulder as their swings passed each other.

“I was just looking around at all these nice big trees,” said Sam. “When was the last time you. climbed one?”

He stopped his swing abruptly, kicking up a cloud of dust. “Carter, you’re a genius.”

Sam grinned. “I know.”

“I’m sorry, Dr. Jackson,” said the young airman. “But I’m under orders not to tell you where General O’Neill or General Carter-O’Neill are. Unless it’s an emergency.”

“Of course you are,” muttered Daniel. “But they didn’t leave the park?”

The kid hesitated, then said, “No, sir.”

“Thank you, airman,” said Daniel. “C’mon, Teal’c, they have to be here somewhere…”

“Are they purposely hiding from us?” asked Teal’c.

“Probably. I-”

Daniel broke off as something small but hard hit his shoulder. He whirled, but the only thing behind him was a large oak tree.

The tree giggled, then said, “Shh!”

Daniel sighed.
