Mrs. Dearly leaned her head against Mr. Dearly’s shoulder, continuing to stroke the White Persian Cat curled in her lap.
“Aren’t we the luckiest pet owners in England?” she asked.
Mr. Dearly puffed his pipe, looking at the baskets beside the fire where Pongo, Missis, Perdita, and Prince were all drowsing. He could hear the distant sound of the television in the kitchen, the Nannies’ low voices and the Cadpig’s higher-pitched barks. The other ninety-six puppies, he knew, were somewhere in the large house and grounds,
“Sometimes,” said Mr. Dearly, “I rather think that they own us.”
Mrs. Dearly laughed.
