Lab Notes
Tony happened to be in the lab when Bruce asked Darcy to find the notes for one of his previous chemical experiments, and he happened to still be in the lab when she returned with the folder ten minutes later.
“Oh, I see how it is,” he said, and they both frowned at him. “Playing favorites, Lewis?”
“For one,” she said, “Bruce is absolutely my favorite, I’ve been very clear about that. And for another, the things you ask me for are usually much more complicated and annoying to find.”
“I’ve asked you to find notes for me,” Tony protested. “It usually takes you an hour, at least.”
Darcy snorted a laugh. “That’s because your notes are a mess. If they aren’t digital, JARVIS can’t access them, which means I have to sort through that mess, by hand. Nothing is organized, nothing is labeled. You write on sticky notes and scraps of paper and napkins - not always paper ones. And that’s on top of me not understanding what any of those notes even say.”
“Not all of us can have our brilliant thoughts only when there’s standard-sized paper around,” Tony said.
“We don’t,” agreed Bruce. He took the folder from Darcy with a grateful smile, then opened it to show Tony the pages of photocopied sticky notes, pictures of equation-filled whiteboards and computer print-outs, each marked with a name and number in Darcy’s loopy handwriting, which matched the tab on the file folder.
“But how come you understand his stuff and not mine?” Tony asked, in what was very nearly a whine. “Mine’s cooler.”
“Yes, it is,” Darcy agreed. At his surprised look, she added, “What, you thought my boyfriend didn’t know I thought that? Relationships are based on honesty, Stark.”
“Don’t change the subject.”
“I don’t understand anything that any of you are working on,” Darcy told him, cheerfully. “And I plan to continue not understanding.”
“Darcy schedules me an administrative time every week or so,” added Bruce. “Usually about half an hour. We go through all my notes, take pictures of the whiteboard or my lab setup. Then, it all gets labeled so she can organize it.”
“That’s what you’ve been doing during ‘administrative time’ !?” spluttered Tony. “I thought it was code for a… a quickie, or something.”
Bruce blinked. “Why would we have a ‘quickie’ in my lab when we have a whole apartment upstairs?”
“I don’t know,” said Tony, flushing pink.
Darcy narrowed her eyes. “Tony,” she said, slowly, “do you and Steve have quickies in your lab?”
He grinned. “Wouldn’t you like to know?”
“That’s why I asked,” she said, grinning back.
“Well, I wouldn’t,” said Bruce. “So, if you’re going to keep up that kind of talk, you can do it someplace other than my lab.”
“Actually, I should go check on Jane,” said Darcy. “I’ll leave you boys to it.”
She kissed Bruce, briefly, then left.
There was a beat of silence, then Tony asked, “You really just go over lab notes?”
Bruce snorted. “Yes, we do.”
“Huh.”
