For Luck

“You kissed me,” said Mick.

“I…” Ray stalled. He wanted to deny it, but he’d never been very good at lying. “Yes, I did.”

“Why?”

“Oh, um,” said Ray. “For luck.”

Mick scowled. “You don’t believe in luck, Haircut. Not scientific, and all that crap.”

“Well, that’s true, but… Wait, how do you know that?”

“You told everyone. Bunch’a times.”

“Yes, but… You were listening?”

“I always listen,” said Mick. “Don’t always understand it, but I got a pretty good memory.”

“Oh,” said Ray.

“Which is how I remember you didn’t answer my question. Why?”

“I…” Ray tried again, then sighed. “It’s stupid, can we just forget it?”

Mick crossed his arms. “No.”

“I thought I was going to die,” Ray blurted. “I mean, I trust Sara’s plans, she never takes unnecessary risks, not with us, but this time… Anyway, the last time I was about to do something heroically stupid and didn’t think it would work and I… You know how people say their lives flash before their eyes? That’s not literally true, of course, it’s just-”

“Get to the point, Haircut.”

“Right,” said Ray. “I just… last time, after I didn’t die, the only thing I’d been able to regret, when I still thought I was going to die, was… that I’d never kissed you. So this time, you were here and I… I didn’t want to regret that anymore.”

“But you didn’t die,” said Mick. “Again. You regret anything now?”

“Should I?” replied Ray. “I mean, I know you don’t like me that way, or even men in general, but-”

“Who said that?” Mick interrupted.

Ray blinked. “Uh, you? You’re always talking about finding ‘hot girls’ wherever - or whenever we end up.”

“Cause they’re nice to look at,” said Mick. “They’re pretty and giggly, nice to have around. But that’s just for fun.”

“What? Then you do…?”

Mick shrugged. “Don’t really care, one way or the other. But a guy like me, people don’t stick around. Never really been anybody who kissed me and meant it. Did you mean it, Raymond?”

The scientist’s eyes widened at the use of his full name. “You mean, you do? You’re not going to, you know, punch me or anything?”

“No.”

“Even if I kissed you again?” Ray pressed.

Mick snorted. “You talk too much, Haircut,” he said, and kissed him.

The need for air broke them apart and Ray blinked at him, breathless. “So,” he said, “You have any other ideas about what we can do instead of talking?”

“You’re the genius, you tell me.”

Ray grinned. “Okay.”

*

“All right, people!” called Sara. “You know what to do. Let’s save history. Again.”

The Legends scattered, but Mick caught Ray’s sleeve, tugging him in for a long, deep kiss.

“For luck,” said Mick, and Ray grinned.
