A Few Reasons
Rodney was actually early for once, and he figured he had enough time to detour to their quarters and change his shirt before meeting John for dinner.
The living room lights were off when he came in, which meant John was probably already in the mess hall, waiting for him. Rodney started toward their room when he saw that the light was on in Zoe’s room.
Normally, their daughter would have been home from school and doing her homework at the kitchen table, but tonight was one of her many, many sleepovers with Teyla’s daughter, Charin, and Zoe had gone straight there after school.
The door to Zoe’s room was open, so Rodney stopped to look inside. John was sitting on the edge of their daughter’s bed, staring down at his folded hands.
“Sheppard?”
John looked up, and burst into tears.
“Oh, no, no, no,” said Rodney, hurrying forward. “You can’t cry! I mean, of course you can cry, I’m not telling you that you can’t, but… please don’t?”
“Not r-really my c-call, McKay,” John hiccupped.
Rodney crouched beside him. “You know I’m not good with crying women,” he said, then added quickly, “or woman-shaped people.”
“You do f-fine with Z-Zoe.”
“That’s different. She just wants me to hold her.”
“S-sounds good to m-me.”
Rodney blinked at him for a moment, then, “Oh! Oh, I can do that!”
He scrambled to sit on the bed beside John, who leaned against him, and Rodney carefully wrapped his arms around his husband’s very rounded middle.
When John’s hiccupping sobs had faded, he asked, softly, “Are you okay?”
“Yeah,” said John. “It’s stupid.”
“Carson said you might have more, um, hormone issues with the second pregnancy. It’s a chemical imbalance, Colonel Stoic, it’s nothing to be embarrassed about.”
“That’s General Stoic,” John corrected, like Rodney had hoped, and he smiled. “And it was something stupid. Here.”
He opened his hands to show Rodney the little ceramic figure in his palms. It was a good luck charm from the people of P3X-992, something like a guardian angel and believed in at various levels by the natives. This particular figure had been a gift to Zoe, then about a year old, when Lorne had mentioned that his commander had a child, and it had been sitting on her dresser ever since.
Until now, apparently.
The figurine lay in John’s hand, in two pieces, the tiny painted head now separated from the tiny painted body.
“I was making Zoe’s bed and I knocked it over,” said John. “And I just… maybe it was just so weird and new when I was expecting Zoe, but now I just feel huge and clumsy and-”
“Hey,” Rodney interrupted. “You’re not! I know that I’m supposed to tell you that you’re beautiful and glowing and whatever, but you came to me for comfort, so this is what you get.”
He paused, waiting until John was looking at him, then continued, “You are amazing. You turned your body into a whole new shape to have our children. Pregnancy and childbirth… I can’t even imagine, and I was there. Every time I see you, every time, no matter what I’m working on or doing, there is a tiny part of my brain that stops to think this man loves me and that is just the most amazing-”
Rodney had more, he had lots more, but John had apparently had enough. He kissed him, hard, dropping the broken figure onto Zoe’s bedspread to slide both hands under Rodney’s half-untucked shirt.
John pulled back, grinning. “Guess what, Rodney? The baby’s yours.”
Rodney kissed him again, briefly. “I can glue it back together,” he said, picking up the pieces of the figurine.
John grinned again. “That’s why I married you.”
“Of course, my fine gluing skills are one of my best-known qualities.”
“Oh, there were few reasons,” said John, and kissed him again.
