Pick a Side

SG-1 walked through the stargate onto P2X-714 and into the middle of a firefight

They immediately ducked for cover and Jack growled, “What the hell? This planet was supposed to be empty!”

The stargate on P2X-714 was set into a rock wall. The MALP video had shown where the incoming wormhole had vaporized a chunk of rock still in its way and hadn’t shown so much as a mouse stirring on the open plain beyond in the twenty-four hours it had recorded.

“These combatants are all human, O’Neill,” said Teal’c. “With projectile weapons.”

Jack peeked out from their cover to confirm it. When he ducked back down, Daniel rested a hand on his arm, “After the whole Cerberus thing, maybe we shouldn’t jump into choosing a side.”

“You weren’t even with us on that mission,” Jack grumbled, mostly because Daniel was right. “Carter?”

She also risked a look. “Both groups are dressed alike, and equally armed. It’s hard to tell who’s right.”

“Well, we can’t dial home while they’re figuring it out, but we could-” A bullet pinged off the rocks very nearby and he ducked again. “How about the side not shooting at us?”

“I am unable to discern which that is.” Teal’c admitted.

“Okay,” said Jack. “We’ll-”

“General Jack O’Neill!” called a woman’s voice, suddenly. “We request your aid!”

“Shut up, Crazy,” a man’s voice snapped.

The woman apparently ignored him, “We promise a reward of knowledge. And cake.”

Jack frowned and turned back to his team, raising a questioning eyebrow, and Sam and Teal’c nodded.

“Okay. Suppressing fire only,” he said. “Just in case.”

They nodded again and he broke cover, heading toward the voices. A few bursts from his P90 had the other shooters scrambling back, Sam and Daniel right behind him. Teal’c’s staff weapon blast lead to a sudden silence, then the rumble of a vehicle engine heading away.

Jack gave it another beat, then came around the large boulder their possibly-new-allies had been using for cover.

Three people crouched there, weapons lowered - a big, rough looking man; a second medium-sized man in a long brown coat; and a young woman wearing an incongruously fluttery skirt.

“Thanks for the help,” said the brown-coated man. “Hope our Li’l Albatross didn’t scare you.”

“They are not scared,” the young woman told him. “Wary and alert, but not scared.”

“And I suppose you know that the same way you knew my name?” asked Jack.

She nodded, and the other man muttered, “Crazy.”

“Would you mind explaining what we just helped you with?” asked Sam.

“Just a misunderstanding,” said the man in the brown coat.

Daniel smiled. “How about some introductions? Jack, you already know. I’m Daniel Jackson, this is Major Carter and-”

“Teal’c,” said the woman. “The snake in your belly troubles you no longer.”

“That is correct.” Teal’c arched a surprised eyebrow. “I no longer carry an immature symbiote.”

“I am River Tam,” she said, sounding suddenly more lucid. “These are Captain Reynolds and Jayne Cobb, of the Firefly Serenity.”

Reynolds - the man in the coat - scowled. “Ain’t supposed to be a soul on this rock,” he said. “How’s you get here?”

“We came through the stargate,” said Daniel. When that only got him blank looks, he added, “The chapa’ai? The, um, Circle of the Ancestors?”

“It has been long forgotten,” said River.

“We can show you how to use it,” Daniel offered. “We’re from a planet called Earth and-”

He broke off as the big man, Cobb, barked a laugh. “Earth? Nobody’s from Earth, whole thing got destroyed centuries ago.”

Jack shared a sinking look with Sam. “We came from Earth,” she said, firmly. “Just a few minutes ago. In two-thousand-three.”

Reynolds shook his head. “No, it’s twenty-five-seventeen.”

Cobb snorted. “More crazy people.”

“We will talk aboard Serenity,” said River, and walked off.

They stared after her for a long moment, then followed.
