Perspective
“Daniel? Are you okay?”
He looked up to find Sam standing in his office doorway. From that angle, she would have been able to see that his computer screen was blank.
“I… don’t know,” he admitted.
Sam came into the room. “You should get some sleep,” she said. “We’ll start looking for Sha’re again tomorrow.”
“It’s not that,” said Daniel. “I mean, it is that, it’s always that, but… I killed someone today.”
“I don’t mean this the way it will sound,” said Sam. “But you’ve killed people before.”
“I have. And that’s the problem.”
“You’re worried you’re turning into a killer?” she asked, incredulous.
“No, a soldier.” At her expression, he added quickly, “Not that I have anything against soldiers! I might fight against the military industrial complex, but I only have respect for the actual people who serve.”
“Well, thanks,” said Sam. “But I still don’t think I understand.”
“I’m not a pacifist,” said Daniel. “I just believe that violence should be the absolute last resort, for self-defense. But today… I didn’t hesitate.”
“I don’t know that anyone has an answer for that,” she said, softly. “Believe it or not, us soldiers prefer not to kill, too. But if someone has to do it, I’d rather it be me.”
“I guess I never thought about it like that.”
“Look,” said Sam. “It’s probably a good thing you’re not a soldier. The colonel and I - and Teal’c, I’m sure - are trained to think tactically. So it’s important to have another perspective, even if we can’t always listen to you.”
Daniel smiled. “I think I get it. Thanks, Sam.”
She smiled back. “Any time.”
