Half a Dozen

“And does this little one have a name, my dear?” asked the king, still gazing at the bundled baby in his arms.

The queen smiled, leaning back against her pillows, curls damp around her face. “Fern.”

“Fern,” he repeated. “Amaryllis, Briar, Chrysanthemum, Daisy, Eranthis and Fern. Six beautiful daughters.”

“A fine garden,” his wife said. “But perhaps still not large enough.”

The king offered her a teasing smile. “And how many will satisfy you, darling?”

“Oh, a dozen at least,” she laughed, and he leaned down to kiss her, their newest - but apparently not their last - child safely between them.
