Mind & Body

Clint didn’t look up when he heard faint footsteps in the sand behind him. “Ill met by moonlight, fair Titania.”

“Should I be concerned that you’re calling me a Fairy Queen?”

“Aw, c’mon, Phil, you’re not playing right.”

“What, jealous Oberon?,” said Phil, completely deadpan. “Fairies, skip hence.”

Clint grinned at him. “That’s the stuff.”

The other man smiled back and sat beside him on the otherwise deserted beach, somehow not looking out of place in his still-crisp suit. “Only you, Barton.”

“You say that about a lot of things, sir.”

“I suppose I do,” Phil agreed. “But with you, I almost always mean it in a good way.”

“Almost always?” Clint repeated.

“You do have your moments.”

The archer laughed and tilted sideways, turning to rest his head in Phil’s lap. “You know why I do that, right?” he asked, softly. “The quote thing?”

“I suppose because it amuses you,” said Phil, carding his fingers through Clint’s hair. “You’re certainly gleeful enough when you manage to stump me with one.”

“Yeah,” Clint agreed. “But… you never seem surprised that I know Shakespeare, or old poetry. You never get mad when I stump you.”

“Why would I be mad?” said Phil. “You’re much smarter than I am.”

He said it so matter-of-factly that it took a moment for Clint’s brain to catch up. “What?” he spluttered.

Phil’s hands didn’t stop. “Uneducated doesn’t mean unintelligent,” he said. “The way your mind works is… magnificent.”

“Magnificent?” Clint repeated. “Really?”

“Of course,” said Phil. “You didn’t think I married you just for your body, did you?”

Clint laughed, and pulled Phil down for a kiss.
