A Slightly Interesting Post (For Once!)

May 29, 2009 02:30

My day began somewhat rocky - there was no parking to be found anywhere on College Ave as the campus had been infested by a swarm of suit-wearing hopefuls at the Career Day.  I was very frustrated that even with an expensive parking permit, there are only two lots open to students (even over the summer), both of which were entirely thanks to the random event.  This frustration was followed closely by an awkward and unproductive closing therapy session.

However, I then bustled off to work which instantly made my day better.  I love work.  Well, I love my job.  This week we're doing mostly data entry (trying to get through the 1000+ yellow forms from last APA day) which I find quite enjoyable really.  I'm good at my job and I like the people there and they like me and it's doing something I have at least a passing interest in and it pays relatively well and I'm very very very lucky to have snagged it.  Tomorrow is my last official day, and I will so sad to leave.

At work while sifting through Google Reader I had a minor epiphany about censorship and critical analysis that I hope to articulate in a proper blog post very soon.

Today I started reading The Time Traveler's Wife.  One of my mentees gave it to me as a way to get to know her since we hadn't had much time at the end of the year to connect, and since it's one of her favorite books.  This is, by the way, one of the best ideas I've ever heard of.  What a great way to introduce yourself to someone - through literature.  So far it's quite interesting, though trying to grasp even the simplest concepts inherent in time travel always baffle me, so I hope it gets a bit easier soon.

I started watching Green Wing on Hulu.  It's weird - and VERY British.  There are times where the jokes are delivered dryly with cutting wit, and there are others when the characters just do absolutely bizarre and unrealistic things for a bit of slapstick humor.  Very odd indeed.  But I must admit I'm intrigued.  It's been compared to Scrubs, but apart from the hospital-comedy thing I don't really see much in common.  I think one of the main differences I've noticed between American and British comedy is that British comedy frequently ignores realistic characters - the viewer isn't permitted to get to know them on a deeper level.  Hm.... must think more on this.  (PS - While we're at it I must mention that I loving the new Denis Leary commercial for Hulu.  Much better than Alec Baldwin's or Seth Macfarlane's.  His eyes are so strangely small...  Also, is anyone else obsessed with the Real Housewives of NJ?  Because I totally am omg it's ridiculous!)

Then I decided to force myself to be sociable because I knew it would be good for me and make me feel better, so I got Matt and me Thai (figured I should get it one last time before I move away!!!) and sat in on the Zipperface!!?! read-through where I not only found myself greatly entertained, but also wound up being very productive.  Hurrah!  Then I hung out with everyone for drinks at Stuff Yer Face, and the evening finally culminated in a midnight showing of the truly awful Drag Me to Hell.  Apparently I would have appreciated it more if I knew more about the history of horror films and cheesy Sam Raimi ones at that.  But it was still more entertaining than I expected - but entertaining does NOT mean good.  It doesn't even mean scary, even though I am a total pussy and spent the whole time clinging to Matt's jacket and screaming at every little noise.  But it was nice to get out, I distracted myself from unproductive thoughts, I got things done, I got to spend time with people I haven't seen in a really long time, and all in all I am very happy with the evening despite the reckless abuse of dollars and calories.

Tomorrow is my last day at work and moving some boxes into storage.  Saturday is moving everything else out of the house and also my 22nd birthday.  And Sunday is when Everything Changes..........
