I hate favorites too!
A long time ago, when I emerged from my teenage years I think, I thought everyone should have a favorite everything; color, actress, city, time-period, etc. I thought this then because I myself was aiming for transcendence and wanted to be well-rounded enough to know everything well enough to have a favorite.
But favorites don't work that way, do they. Favorites are given precedence and therefore subject others in their 'category' to be ignored. I first noticed this in myself some years later, I had been saying, like a Pavlovian-dog, "I love Gardenias, they are my favorite flower!" for so long that I had finally realized how closed-minded I had become to any other flower out there!
Next, I saw the addiction to favorites overall effect on people around me. I found people would use a favorite like a crutch, depend on it and then-forth disregard everything else, based on the knowledge of that one thing. We think it's sooo important to have opinions! I noticed the worst side-effect was that people became obsessed

However, it's really a shame you won't eat my brussel sprouts. I cut them in half and gild them in really good olive oil then I bless them with a light rain of sliced garlic and plenty of freshly ground black pepper and thick-cut rinds of lemon and finally, I throw in some chopped up capers. The trick is to cook them gently and long enough so that they are not at all crisp. That's when their own flavor makes a statement. After they are done and on a plate I annoint them with a few squeezes of lemon.

All I remember is being 17. My father who eats ANYTHING (except blue cheese) tried to force me to eat those stinky things. I sat there all night.. and well into the next day before he finally cracked and let me go!
