Here is a new story of mine, lets see how long it takes for me to update it lol
The trees around her flew by as the young woman ran as fast as she could, her chest heaving in and out as she tried to keep breathing. Her breaths were light as she tried to keep the sound she was making minimal as to not get caught. The thoughts in her head were rapid as she tried to think of a way to escape her pursuer but the ongoing sea of trees did nothing but crush her hopes.
A low growl was heard not far behind her before she whipped her head around to look and ended up stumbling to the ground. She landed hard, her hands and knees scraped and bleeding as she tried to lift her tired body up. Dragging her body along as fast as she could muster, the young woman wouldn’t give up in losing her pursuer. Eventually the adrenaline began to wear off as she felt her entire being grow extremely fatigued and heavy. She ducked behind a tree, collapsing with her back against the trunk, praying that whatever was behind her would pass by her.
This is going to be the end of me…I’m going to be devoured without saying goodbye to my family…
“Hasn’t anyone told you how dangerous these woods are?!” an angry man’s voice snapped at the young woman.
She looked up not expecting the handsome man staring angrily down at her. He grabbed her hand and pulled her up, but her legs were too weak and buckled beneath her. She fell into his arms as he held her up with his lean muscles. Her vision was blurring as exhaustion set in.
“I just want to go home…mom…dad…” she muttered pitifully into the unknown man’s chest before passing out.
He let out a sigh before stroking the girl’s dark chocolate hair and mumbling to himself, “You would have been a perfect treat for the wolves…I don’t know why I’m letting you go…”
With a swift motion the young man picked the limp girl’s body and took off quickly into the night.
Akira could feel someone shaking her and calling her name. After opening her eyes she was relieved to see her mother staring down at her with tears in her eyes. Somehow she was no longer in the woods but back in the village. She had no memories of getting back on her own except the strange feeling of someone protecting her on her way back. When she explained to her frantic mother all she could say was that she was lucky and a forest spirit must have taken pity on her and saved her from the wolves.
Akira agreed it must have been a guardian spirit that saved her from the jaws of death that chased her that night. From that night on her mother kept a closer eye on her young daughter as she became one of the few survivors of the notorious woods.
The village she was a part of was neither small nor large but the perfect size, with a large forest placed just to the south of it. It had many legends surrounding it as many who went in never survived and neither their remains could be found. Yet, any person who went missing would always have their bones found placed just beyond the trees as if someone placed them there after devouring them completely. Because of these cases the village developed stories of the wolves that would howl and terrorize the woods but dared to never set foot in the village as it belonged to the humans as the woods belonged to them. Any unfortunate soul that dared set foot beyond the trees would face the punishment of the wolves which was their own death.
Anyone who survived the woods was looked at differently when they came back to the village as everyone would know that they had survived death. It was no different when all heard of the Miyazawa’s daughter, Akira, had returned from the woods with only scrapes on her hands and knees and placed in the same spot the bones of victims were found. Some saw her as blessed by the woods while others saw her as cursed with only so much time before the wolves would come to take her back. Because of these rumors she spent the next few years getting used to people speaking behind her back and eventually when she turned twenty-one she began to notice that people were finally forgetting her past.
“It must be nice having guys approach you and follow you,” Akira sighed as she watched her dear friend kindly turn down another boy seeking her affection.
Noriko was one of the few girls in the village who dared to stay friends with Akira after she came back from the woods. She had always been a jokester who played around with the boys who couldn’t help but fall for her playful banter. Even though she wasn’t overly feminine looking nor too boyish, she still was thought of as cute.
“You know you have admirers too,” Noriko retorted as she joined her friend’s side, “they are just too afraid to approach such a good looking woman like yourself when they get told by their parents how dangerous you could be. You know the other day one of the guys told me the reason he never went through on his feelings for you was because his mother told him that your beauty saved your life from the woods and that you’ll end up the poor bride to the wood spirit that saved you that night.”
It wasn’t the first time Akira had heard such rumors from the mothers of the village. Was she so beautiful that it saved her that night? Was she going to be the bride of a forest spirit one day? Those kinds of things plagued her since the night she was saved. It made her wish she had been eaten that night so she wouldn’t have suffered this much this whole time. It was also becoming hard on her family that wished she would find a husband but not as many lined up at their door since she was marked as the mysterious woman who survived the curse of the woods.
“I wish that whoever saved me that night would just come and take me already! I’m tired of waiting around for some guy to take pity on me or get enough courage to dare date me. I feel like an outcast…” Akira complained loudly before she brought her legs in to her chest.
“If you’re so desperate to marry then why don’t you accept my proposal already?” a familiar voice pointed out as he approached the girls.
Noriko smiled up at him but Akira just let out a groan. She knew without one look at him that it was none other than Taisuke Fujigaya. He was one of the most sought after men in village as he had looks and wealth, but to Akira he was still the young awkward kid that used to follow her and Noriko around when they were growing up. He was barely eighteen now, just old enough to start finding himself a wife, which made the girls go crazy in trying to get his attention but to no avail.
When Akira had returned to the village she was just eighteen and he was barely fifteen, but the young man had proposed to her nonetheless after she expressed her fears of being unable to marry. She had obviously turned him down as he was still a child to her but he never let it go even years later. Once he became legal he only grew worse in his pursuit of her hand in marriage.
“Taisuke will you ever leave me alone? I won’t accept your proposal! I want to fall in love and marry that person!” she rejected him once again.
“Just give me a chance! I know you’ve only ever seen me as the younger brother but I’ve changed! I’m a man now and I’ll take care of you and make you fall in love with me as a man,” he spat back at her.
Akira stood up, brushing off her dark royal purple dress before walking away unable to stand being near him any longer. Noriko watched as her friend left, feeling bad for both sides. Meanwhile the still fuming Akira walked onwards in the direction of her house which was in the south side of the village. Instead of going inside she went around to the back to sit on a tree stump as she looked at the woods just behind her home.
“Why did you let me go that night? Was it really luck or a fluke?” she asked the trees with no expectation for an answer.
It was the same old questions she asked every time she was alone in her backyard.
“If you don’t come take me away wood spirit then I’ll have to marry that kid and have his children, is that what you wanted when you saved me?” she asked again.
There was nothing but silence as she closed her eyes, the feelings of tears coming forward as they silently spilled down her cheeks. She wiped them away from her eyes and looked again towards to the woods, her heart stopping when she saw someone amongst the trees.
It was a handsome young man whom she didn’t recognize but at the same time she felt this familiarity towards him. He stood right between the trees at the edge of the forest staring at her with a big smile on his face. The dark sandy brown bangs fell just above his smiling eyes as he reached out to her with a single open hand. She stood up and took a step towards him as she tried to figure out what he was doing so close to those dangerous woods.
“Get away from there! The woods will take your life!” she called out to him as she walked faster towards him.
He retracted his hand before turning and heading further into the woods. Akira’s pace quickened as she took off after him, unable to let another poor soul fall victim to the woods. She quickly stopped right at the edge of the woods, her feet unwilling to let her take another step into the woods. Her eyes scanned the trees in hopes of finding the young man but he was nowhere in sight.
Unbeknownst to Akira, the young man was watching her from the safety of the trees. He smiled with amusement as she looked frantically for him. He found her kindness for a stranger to be adorable as it made him yearn for her more. Then he noticed how she wouldn’t dare take another step towards the trees as he figured she was too scared to dare step into these woods again.
“At least you’ve learned your lesson…” he uttered softly though part of him wished she would take that one step closer into the trees.
Since that fateful night he could never completely forget her face and even years later she had only changed more into a beautiful woman. He could even smell the faint traces of himself on her that he had left to mark her and protect her from other men. He knew it worked since the men in her village kept a safe distance from her which he knew was partly due to the unconscious feeling of being unable to approach her because of his smell. It was a common practice his kind used to keep other males away from the females they favored.
It was the first time though that he had used it on a female human and it had caused him a lot of worry as he feared it would attract his wolf brethren to her. Because of this he would occasionally check on her from the woods, wishing he had the courage to step into her village in his human form, but for now he restrained himself to the trees.
“One day Akira I will make your wish come true and I will steal you away from this village that’s afraid of you,” he breathed out as he extended his hand out to her.
He was ready to run off back to his pack until his heart stopped at the sight of her lifting her shaking foot and taking a step into the woods. Neither was prepared for what that single step would do to their long separated worlds.
Alright thats it for the first chapter, let me know what you think!
