Today is such a historic day. As I walk around campus, I can feel the air tingling with excitement and anxiety. I waited in line for two hours to vote. And they say the youth is apathetic. I think this year things are different; we are going to raise our voices in a big way. This is bigger than partisan politics. Even as an Obama supporter, I smile when I see the Young Republican tables on the mall or a McCain pin. No matter a person's leaning, it thrills me to see young people finally engaging and giving a shit. Because it DOES matter.
This election matters.
I feel cautiously hopeful that today America will make history by electing its first African-American president. That we will begin to move past our bruised race relations once and for all. A leader with the mandate of the people. I cannot be sure, but it seems to be heading that way.
Even if McCain wins, I must say he is a vast improvement on George W. Bush. He is an articulate man with a lot of experience and integrity. If he wins, I can still have pride in the country's president. Which is more than I could say four years ago.
And that's something.
