Bulletproof: An Erik/Charles FST

First time making one of these. Forgive the crappy cover design >>;;; Also, I give reasons for my song choices. Feel free to skip down to the bottom to download the files.

Bullet Proof: An Erik/Charles FST

1. Violet Hill-Coldplay

Was a long and dark December
From the rooftops I remember
There was snow
White snow

Clearly I remember
From the windows they were watching
While we froze
Down below

I know, I know. It was raining when he went to the camps, not snowing. Something about this song though reminds me of young Eric. That sense of hopelessness and the feeling of being controlled and manipulated. The ultimate loss of his mother... It sort of fits that mood. Maybe I'm just reading too much into something that isn't actually there, but yes...

2. Russian Ruolette-10 Years

It's Russian roulette with no luck.
You can kiss it good-bye there's no such thing as sympathy.
When the disease is entering.
At first glance your instinct says this stranger's a little dangerous.
The cat was killed from curious thrills.
Now Christ has left the manger.

The taste is so divine.
So divine.
A chemical come alive.
come alive.

Welcome to your vice.
Good luck with life.
Cause you can't, you can't, you can't kill me that easily.

This song gives me a sadistic sort of feeling when I listen to it. It's Erik all grown up. And he's hunting Shaw down, killing Nazis along the way. That charming young man at the bar has already planned your demise. (And really, who doesn't get a kick out of Michael Fassbender killing nazis? Again.) It's all kinds of twisted and catchy at the same time. I thought it was fitting.

3. Simon-Lifehouse

Catch your breath,
Hit the wall,
Scream out loud,
As you start to crawl
Back in your cage
The only place
Where they will
Leave you alone.
'Cause the weak will
Seek the weaker til they've broken them.
Could you get it back again?
Would it be the same?
Fulfillment to their lack of strength at your expense,
Left you with no defense;
They tore it down.

And I have felt the same as you,
I've felt the same as you,
I've felt the same.

The first meeting: Wherein Erik is rescued by a complete stranger who already knows him so intimately... who can relate to him even. He's seen the worst sides of human nature. All this time, he's felt so alone. He really isn't alone.  He's alright.  Charles tells him that.

4. Bullet Proof-Goo Goo Dolls

Do you listen to yourself
Never live for someone else
Do you like the way you feel
Nothing hurts when no one's real
She wants to shake this scene
Yeah she wants to shake with me
She's not looking for the holes in all the lies

I wanna bullet proof your soul
Would you like to lose control
I won't let you fall until you tell me so

What are we? (Whatchya wanna be)
Everything! (That you wanna be)
All I need (Right in front of me)
I've know before

The title for this FST isn't just a cruel irony. Really. This song just reminds me of Charles trying to get Erik to stay, telling him he could be part of something bigger than himself. And well... yeah, that title is still very unsettling given the charcters we're relating it to. The lyrics fit though.

5. Follow You Down-Gin Blossoms

I know we're headed somewhere, I can see how far we've come
But still I can't remember anything
Let's not do the wrong thing and I'll swear it might be fun
It's a long way down when all the knots we've tied have come undone
Anywhere you go, I'll follow you down
Anyplace but those I know by heart
Anywhere you go, I'll follow you down
I'll follow you down, but not that far

Road trip!!! And just a hint of Erik going rouge and nearly causing an international incident by invading a Russian official's home. In all seriousness though, it's Charles following Erik and vice verse. Plus Charles really can't seem to leave that man alone. Self-explainitory, really. And again with the irony: "Are they going to find us laying face down in the sand? So what the hell, well we've already been forever damned." I really didn't plan that when I made this. It sort of popped out when I was listening to the whole thing again.

6. Let Go-Frou Frou

Drink up baby doll
Are you in or are you out?
Leave your things behind
'Cause it's all going off without you
Excuse me too busy you're writing your tragedy
These mishaps
You bubble-wrap
When you've no idea what you're like

So, let go, let go
Jump in
Oh well, what you waiting for?
It's all right
'Cause there's beauty in the breakdown
So, let go, let go
Just get in
Oh, it's so amazing here
It's all right
'cause there's beauty in the breakdown

This song is very soothing. Ultimately when I think of that point between rage and serenity, this is what comes to mind. Just letting go. The emotion of the song really captures that intensity between Erik and Charles. Soft, encouraging. Romantic, even.

7. Revolution-The Beatles

You say you want a revolution
Well, you know
We all want to change the world
You tell me that it's evolution
Well, you know
We all want to change the world
But when you talk about destruction
Don't you know that you can count me out
Don't you know it's gonna be all right
all right, all right

The clash of ideologies. A foreshadowing of something these two cannot reconcile. Plus we get that line about evolution, which... yeah. I did get a kick out of that, not gonna lie.

8. Cold War Transmissions-Anberlin

Side by side we face each other
Standing here alone together
Your code I'll break, you made your last mistake
Called out cold war
Remnants now on the floor

This is Russian radio here
Calling you to come back home
This is Russian radio here
Run while you still, you still can

I wanted to have this song on an FST the day I first saw this movie. It's a double reference: The actual Cold War and the mutants ultimately facing off against each other. And right before everything goes horribly, horribly wrong, Charles tries to call Erik back, make him listen... I just really think it works, not only for Erik/Charles, but for the movie itself.

9. Sympathy-Karmina

Take shelter, protect your heart
'Cause some treat it as art
Painting over and over it again
I try not to fall apart, attempting to hold on
Freak out, and everyone plays along
That I’m

Doing just fine, I’m doing just fine
Just give me some time, I need to close my eyes
I’m doing just fine, and I’ll be all right
Don’t worry I’m fine, as I leave the world behind
Don’t touch me I’m shaking, can you hear me breaking
Yet somehow I’m still standing, oh
Well maybe I’m crazy, but this is really hard for me
Can I get some sympathy

The breakup. Divorce. Separation. Whatever you prefer to call it, it wasn't pretty. And for such a beautiful disaster, I wanted a beautiful song that articulated that raw feeling of betrayal and despair. This song really worked for me. It's chaotic and desperate, bitter, hurt. It's Erik loosing the one good thing he had going for him and Charles letting go of someone he loves, but knows he can't stay with. In a way it ties in with the second song. "There's no such thing as sympathy" in Eric's mind. Peace was never an option. But here his mind is all on Charles. "But this is really hard for me, can I get some sympathy?" All kinds of OUCH.

10. Do What You Have to Do-Sarah McLachlan

What ravages of spirit
Conjured this temptuous rage
Created you a monster
Broken by the rules of love
And fate has led you through it
You do what you have to do
And fate has led you through it
You do what you have to do ...
And I have the sense to recognize that
I don’t know how to let you go

This is a very wistful piece. Sarah McLachlan writes a lot of songs about heartbreak and love, but this one really explains something quintessential about Erik and Charles. They love each other. Always will. They want one another. The truth of the matter is, they just can't be together. Even with that in mind, neither of them can truly let go of what they had. What might have been...

11. We Just Disagree-Dave Mason

I'm going back to a place that's far away. How bout you?
Have you got a place to stay? Why should I care?
When I'm just trying to get along We were friends
But now it's the end of our love song...

So let's leave it alone, 'cause we can't see eye to eye.
There ain't no good guys, there ain't no bad guys.
There's only you and me and we just disagree.
Ooo - ooo - ooohoo oh - oh - o-whoa

This can be viewed as an epilogue of sorts. For me, this is Erik/Charles. It's their song. There isn't a line that doesn't fit them in some way shape or form.  It was actually one of the first songs I thought of when creating this FST.

And that's that!  Hope you all enjoy this. It was fun for me to make.
