Gogo gadget recommend me a book! Something for the beach, preferably fantasy, preferably relatively nonstandard. Please help! I'll love you forever and reward the winner with a st. Martin postcard if they want it!
I *knew* there was a series you'd mentioned that I'd meant to note down, and it was the DreamhunterDreamquake duo. Thank you. Definite list. I will look into City in the Lake as well :D thanks!
any of the books by Gregory Maguire (tho my favourite so far is Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister), which combine history, fairytales, and fantasy and are really well written.
also, mina really liked The Last Templar, which must say something about the book because he usually hates reading.
See, for whatever reason I can't get into Gregory Maguire--I read Wicked, and I liked it fine, but not well enough to grab another, if that makes sense. Watchmen is definitely on my list, I just need to get around to it... and Templars aren't quite far enough into the realm of the fantastic for me right now--my general joking excuse for things going weird or wrong in the world is "The Templars Did It", or "The Freemasons Did It".
Watchmen, though, that shall go on the list for sure.
I recommend a book called "The Walrus and the Warwolf" by Hugh Cook. It's a rollicking fantasy adventure full of heroes, pirates and disaster, and one of the most charming and un-cookie cutter fantasies I've ever written. My own copy, which I've had for about 20 years now, is ridiculously dog-eared.
Well, long story short, it's an interweaving series over the same time period with different central characters for each book. I read #4 first, then #7 (i think?), then #1. I've only just finished #3. Because it's not strictly chronological, you can read them in any order you like.
#4 is probably the easiest and most fun to start on. #3 is more difficult, but also very rewarding in return. #1 is the closest to a straight-up hero-fantasy tale.

Okay, for real nonstandard fantasy, Dreamhunter and Dreamquake by Elizabeth Knox.
