So tired...

...and for no good reason, either!

Overslept this morning. Had some crazy-ass dream. Not that I remember anything about it as that was wiped clear by the "OMG! I should be getting on the bus RIGHT NOW!" panic. But I do know it got strange enough that it triggered the "Hey, that's really weird... wait... this is a dream... and I distinctly remember my second alarm going off..." thought that immediately preceded the panic.

Spent most of the day tinkering with the webserver we're setting up in house. Frustrated with MSSQL, I installed MySQL and PHP last week. They are now working happily along with IIS and PHPMyAdmin. Why is it that PHPMyAdmin is so much more straightforward to use than MSSQL Management Studio?

Spent another hunk of the day getting all the necessary programs up and running on one of the new computers. Kind of looking forward to seeing just how good/bad Vista is for doing the work we do. I know it wreaked havoc with the boss's ability to do video work... but I think SP1 and proper drivers could fix that. (He just reinstalled XP Pro last week.) Aside from the need to hunt down where options have moved to and a few extra dialog boxes I have to click "Yes" on ("No, really, when I click on a program to run it, I really do want to run it, thankyouverymuch"), things haven't been that bad.

On the way home there was a large black dude dressed all in black at Fort Totten talking loudly to no one in particular about a shooting that had just happened near the Glenmont Station. He made it very clear that if it was someone he knew who had been shot, someone else was going to get murdered. "It'll be like the Fourth of July," he said. Oddly, in a conversation he struck up with another guy on the train, he said things that were much more intelligent. He really seemed like a decent guy... aside from all that talk about shooting people up if they messed with any of his boys. I'll never get the gang mentality of always having to be out to get someone and/or always being someone else's target.

At the Staples plaza, near the Glenmont Metro station, there was no sign of a police presence to indicate that a shooting had happened in the past hour. There were, however, a handful of shady characters dressed in red and white standing around a couple of nondescript vans in the parking lot. Methinks someone hath been punk'd. (Though probably not at all in a good way.)

If I didn't know better, I'd think I had dreamed that whole bit. It was kind of surreal. Made me want to record it.

On a semi-related topic: How many distinct sub-cultures can you name off the top of your head? Goth, Gang, Emo and Hippy are the first four that pop into my head... and I can think of a few more...
