There's just something about anything connected to the Internet.
Without fail, it sucks time right away from you.
Sometimes, that's a very, very bad thing.
And then there's the rest of the time.
I often get sucked in to things, but since I discovered in back in the early 90s, the Internet has come to give TV a run for it's money (and my time). And that's not just web-browsing or YouTube watching--it's everything.
Ev. Ry. Thing.
Today at work I was trying to get a client's web site to work correctly. I was elbow deep in the code, using up all the space on both monitors on my desk and still flipping back and forth among different program windows and references. I could see what needed to be changed and even how the best way to change it would be. But then the jig-saw puzzle nature of working on other people's sites comes into play. You can't just go changing everything to the best possible way. You have to get good at changing just what needs to be changed in the way that fits with what's already there.
And before I knew it, an hour or so had slipped by. Yeah, a bunch of that is billable, but a bunch isn't. And, thankfully, that's OK with the boss. He's hiring me to dig into these things.
And boy am I digging.
I still haven't figured out how to really fit LJ reading into my day--partially because I feel like I'm slacking if I do that (regardless of how laid-back the office it... I'm my own slave driver, doesn't matter what anyone else says), partially because, yes, I am actually that busy--so catching up once I'm home has been a bitch and a half. At least it is on days like today when well over 50 posts roll through my friend's list during the day. Doesn't help that I read all the comments, too.
There's also still that other time sink--TV! With this ReplayTV I'm nowhere near as worried about running out of disks to record things on. So, of course, I'm grabbing more stuff. Coupled with the new work schedule (which is still being figured out), I'm collecting more than I could possibly watch in any given week. Let alone in weeks where I'm actually doing things out and about. With people.
But, wow, do I watch some damn good stuff. Heroes had my rapt attention. It is, perhaps, the second-best genre show on TV (first being Battlestar Galactica and definitely in the top ten of all time. At least my top ten of all time.
So... now that I've got all sorts of awe-inspired and technologically fueled creative juices running through me I should probably dive back into creative projects. It's a good thing I'm used to not sleeping much... I'm running out of space to squeeze things in. ;)
The things is, looking around at all the people I know and everything they do, all I can really think is: Hot damn, I can most certainly do it.
Whatever "it" may be.
I should probably figure that out first, huh? :)
