Every now and then, I cause myself great deals of pain giving a movie I know is going to be bad the chance to prove me wrong.
Since I first saw the ads for
Alone In The Dark, I knew it was going to be a bad movie. Why? Because it was produced and directed by Uwe Bolle and starred Christian Slater and Tara Reid.
The credits say this was based on the Atari game of the same name. I have no idea how that is possible. That was an atmospheric, ground-breaking game with Lovecraftian elements. This film runs like a re-tread of any number of monster/action flicks with adequate (and over-used) special effects, a creature design (and sequences) that look just like stuff from the Alien series and paper-thin characters that have no need for consistent behavior because the plot doesn't matter.
It's all about the shootin'. And that's nothing new.
And to top is all off, the end makes no sense at all in the context of what has happened in the film.
Why, oh why, do people keep letting Uwe Bolle make movies? I know he pays for them all himself. But someone has to do something. This is just a mediocre waste of film, time and talent. OK. Maybe not talent. Christian Slater is well past his prime and Tara Reid is, well, Tara Reid. Not that a movie like this takes any acting talent. So the cast is just fine for it.
Bottom line is, I've wasted my time so you don't have to.
