Friday night I ended up hitting the Rude Mechanical's version of A Midsummer Night's Dream with
gore_whore_5 and
spirit_o_fire. It was a truly fabulous production. Really funny and just generally really well done. The Rudes are a great bunch of very talented people. Hitting the cast party afterward almost made me want to get involved with theater stuff again. Then I remembered that I really can't act (or, more to the point, memorize lines in a timely fashion). So I'll stick to the audience side of things.
Instead of spending the night in the Columbia area, I hopped on the Metro and made the trip back to Rockville after the festivities. A good half hour on the Red Line was spent listening to a fiance get into an argument with his bride-to-be that just can't be won. I gather they had spent the entire day doing wedding-related things. The topic of his mother and her influence on the wedding plans came up. The woman said "I feel like I'm alone in this" implying that he takes his mother's side in planning disputes. He tried for half an hour to "fix" things. That just can't be done. Especially when you say things like "Well, there's going to be some compromises..." I felt like walking over to him and just telling him he should shut his mouth, let her vent and then just give her a hug. Then I remembered that I don't insert myself into the domestic issues of complete strangers without being asked to do so. So I just looked out the window into the blackness of the night and dozed a little as the train rocked through construction.
Saturday afternoon (after I woke up) was spent doing a little cleaning and getting a jump on laundry. Then it was back to the Metro to make it
hotfix's birthday bash down in DC. That was a lot of fun. It's always fun to get together with the extended circle of friends
hotfix and
ceosanna have. Such a wildly diverse, creative and all-around beautiful group of people! I'm very happy to be a part of that. The food was good, the cake divine and the conversation excellent. I almost decided to go back to
bondagejelly and
dallendoug's place to keep some form of conversation going. Then I remembered I'd be spending six or so hours there on Sunday. So I hitched a ride back to Rockville with
fractalwoman instead and her and I did some much-needed catching up.
Sunday was gaming day, as usual. Thrust back into the 1920's Call of C'thulhu campaign, there was much mayhem and creepiness. This is going to be a great run with this bunch of people (especially if this particular group of characters survives for a while). Being involved with a good role playing game is something I missed for a long time before signing up with this crew. It is a welcome social escape from the depressing nature of reality. For a few hours, nothing else really matters except chasing down the clues to the big, dark mystery that the characters are drawn into. Then I remembered harsh reality would be knocking again soon enough. So after the game,
dallendoug and crew were nice enough to make a stop by the Supermarket of Despair so I could pick up lunchy stuff for the week and forego the extra expense of buying lunch every day down in DC.
I am still in awe of the great people I have met since I came down here. Those five years I spent in social limbo after college are still a weight holding me down, but I'm gnawing through those chains and should be floating free and clear soon... probably about the same time my nasty financial situation clears up. Hopefully, that will all happen soon.
