Disintegration sounds more horrific than explosion to me. I can't imagine.

Indeed it does.

But something torn apart by shearing forces does, I suppose, technically disintigrate (in the non-scifi meaning of the term).

No matter what you call it, it was rough to watch way back in 5th grade.

Oh hell... they were alive for three minutes after disintegration? And there's a possibility they were conscious the entire time? Can you IMAGINE the horror in their last few minutes of life? Oh shit, that is just WRONG.

Yep.

I don't know... I think after the first minute or so, when you realize there's absolutely nothing you can do, it gets really, really calm.
