OK, so on Sunday I made the rounds of a few Halloween stores (and the new Ranger Surplus here in Rockville) searching for costume ideas.
I've got a few, but really don't know how much money I want to spend on any of them or how much work I'm realistically going to get done on them. That, and I only have one party to go to so far. And that Saturday night at Chiaro that I'm sure will be costume-filled.
Here's the basic rundown, I'm looking for opinions and other ideas.
I'm goin' out West
Maybe I can blame this on the proliferation of Serenity fans at DragonCon. Maybe it's just my classic American male side (what little of that there is) trying to assert itself. Maybe it's just an easy set of costume ideas. A cowboy of some sort. What we're looking at here is either Serenity-ish Browncoat or more "down-to-earth" like The Lone Ranger (I can re-use my Zorro mask) or just a generic western character (I'm thinking either old TV shows or more recent movies... Maverick, Young Guns, Quick and the Dead, etc.).
It's the end of the world as we know it
Yay for post-apocalyptic eclectic regalia. A trip to the army surplus store followed by a trip to Home Depot should allow me to throw together something Mad Max-ish.
Out of the Box
There is, of course, a plethora of ready-made costumes out there. I could just pick up one of those. Maybe just a mask and one of my cloaks or capes... I do have this old burlap costume I made more than a decade ago... it doesn't smell too bad...
Total cop out
Or I could just throw on my ren fair wear. But I really don't want to do that. It's a last resort.
hrm... I thought that list would be longer. Then I realized how much work a lot of the other ideas I've had were. We're talking fabricating things and tooling leather and lots and lots of heavy duty sewing. None of which I can actually do very well at all.
Well, no matter what it won't be worse than all the money I dropped on my failed vampire costume a few years ago. (The fangs wouldn't stay on my crooked teeth, the prosthetics wouldn't stick to my face the right way and my hair would do absolutely nothing even close to what I had in mind... very frustrating, indeed.)
